This item is not in stock at MyComicShop. If you use the "Add to want list" tab to add this issue to your want list, we will email you when it becomes available.
Counter Leg-wise (circa 1940) is a promotional giveaway distributed by Gotham Gold Stockings. Produced and published by the Vic Herman Studios, a comic book publisher active in the 1940's. 8 pages, light blue and black on white paper stock. The comic begins with a montage splash panel of a woman cleaning, dressing kids, cooking and playing golf, then continues with a comic book-styled presentation of the merits of Gotham Gold Stripe Stockings. Cut to a salesgirl at the stocking counter wondering how best to sell stocking when "everybody wears them" already. The other girl lifts up her skirt to show her legs and the new salesgirl shows her garters, demonstrating that Gotham Gold Stripe Stockings fit every size woman because of "coordinated proportions." The word denier, an indication of yarn size, is used in describing the stockings gauge, which relates to the number of threads used in 1.5-in. of fabric, and twist, which adds to stocking stretch, snag resistance and appearance. The five hidden features of Gotham Gold Stripe Stockings are described: krimp twist, camouflage heel, hidden sole, secret toe, and shadow seam. The reader is also told that the "gold strip" starts at the garterwelt (the use of garters was still common in the 1940's). Armed with the many advantages of Gotham Gold Stripe Stockings, the salesgirl sells her first customer several pairs of stockings.

This book is very unusual, because it has comic book features from several different publishers: DC, Fawcett, Dell and True Comics (Parents Magazine Institute). It also has a 10 cent cover price, rather than being a promotional giveaway. The book was primarily sold through the mail. The book is pocket digest size and 132 pages, including covers. The comics are in black and white. Features include Captain Marvel (Shazam), Robotman (who was a backup feature in Action Comics with Superman), Red Ryder by Fred Harman, the Boy Commandos, Ibis the Invincible, and the humorous "Culture Corner" by Basil Wolverton. There are also real fact features on Leonardo Da Vinci, Rudolph Diesel, and Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame baseball player Bob Feller. The center is an 8 page full-color Daisy catalog, featuring Red Ryder and showcasing such products as the 1000 shot repeater cowboy carbine, the number 118 pistol target set, the daisy pump gun (king of all air rifles), daisy bullseye shot, the Buck Rogers U 238 Atomic Pistol Holster Set, the Number 71 Daisy Repeating Water Pistol, and more. Released in 1979 by DC Comics to promote their ability to create promotional comics and premiums for businesses to educate and advertise their products. Art by Dick Giordano. From the introduction: "Comics, once intended solely for entertainment, can now combine that value with the essentials of marketing. When text and illustration are locked in storytelling form, they deliver a persuasive selling message that is clear, succinct and completely irresistible. No one can pass up a comic strip. Comic story and art development are DC's business. From conceptual stages fright through research, copy, art, production and print, we can provide a promotional comic exactly for your needs." A scarce business-to-business marketing tool only seen by other corporate marketing departments like Ford and General Electric. 9-in. x 12-in., 8 total pages, full color.
