First edition, 1939. The Dutch Treat Club was initially founded in 1905 as a luncheon get-together of four writers, four illustrators and two editors and one publisher. The lunch was Dutch -- everyone paid their own bill. From this humble beginning grew an institution still with us today. Since 1920, the club has published a hardcover annual created by members intended for members in conjunction with their annual banquet and party. Past members have included Isaac Asimov, George M. Cohan, Robert E. Sherwood, Edward R. Murrow, Ray Bolger, Walter Cronkite, James Montgomery Flagg, Jimmy Cagney, Lowell Thomas and even Presidents Herbert Hoover, Dwight Eisenhower and Harry Truman. This volume is sub-titled Earlie to Bed and Earlie to Rise. "Being a collection of art, opinion, fiction and fantasy shewing forth the talents of the Club, which has caused these samples to be brought together and privately printed for the members of the Dutch Treat Club and their guests upon the occasion of The Annual Show, March 31, 1939." So many interesting and fun contributions. Stand-outs include a full-page, full color painting and a humorous poem by James Montgomery Flagg, a Rube Goldberg feature of man-on-the-street opinions about the Munich Pact complete with hilarious photographs, illustrations by Mead Schaeffer, Harry Townsend, Dean Cornwell, Carl Mueller, John La Gatta, Russell Patterson and so many others not credited. Also includes a program of the featured entertainment at the banquet. One short play was entitled "The Little King" by Otto Soglow, who even played the King. Munro Leaf, who wrote the famous The Story of Ferdinand childrens book, contributes a funny alphabet for sons and daughters of Dutch Treaters. Otto Soglow contributes a two-page Little King comic strip. Also includes a listing of the members along with their addresses including Harrison Cady, Clifton Fadiman, William DeBeck, Ham Fisher and dozens more. An incredible collection of art, jokes and fiction. Stated limitation of 1,158 copies. Hardcover with no dust jacket as issued, 5 1/4-in. x 8-in., 98 pages, B&W with spot color.
