Our second paperback volume of the acclaimed Complete Peanutsseries finds Schulz establishing his comic universe.
Pigpen and his dust cloud join Charlie Brown, Shermy, Patty, Violet, Schroeder, Lucy, baby Linus, and Snoopy. Charlie Brown hasn't yet abandoned his brasher, prankish behavior from our first volume and Lucy has forcefully elbowed her way to the center of the action. Snoopy's appearances here may come as the biggest surprise: he behaves, for the most part, like a dog!

Volume 7 - 1st printing. "1963-1964!"
Story and art by Charles M. Schulz. Introduction by Bill Melendez. Though the long-running hardcover Complete Peanuts series concluded in 2016 with Vol. 26, the paperback editions continue! This volume is rich in never-before-reprinted strips. More than one fifth of the book had never seen the light of day since their original appearance until reappearing in The Complete Peanuts. These "lost" strips include Linus making a near-successful run for class president and Snoopy getting involved with a group of politically fanatical birds. Also in this volume: Lucy creates an educational slideshow of Charlie Brown's faults and Snoopy's doghouse begins its conceptual expansion.

Volume 11 - 1st printing. "1971-1972!"
Story and art by Charles M. Schulz.
Peanuts propels into the strip's most iconic decade!
Peanuts surges into the 1970s with Schulz at the peak of his powers and influence: a few jokes about Bob Dylan, Women's Liberation, and Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (!) aside, these two years are as timeless as Peanuts ever was.
Sally Brown-school phobia, malapropisms, unrequited love for Linus and all-elbows her way to center stage. Two long Summer-camp sequences involve Charlie Brown and Peppermint Patty, who has decided that Charlie Brown is madly in love with her, much to his clueless confusion. Snoopy shows up at camp as well, as does Peppermint Patty's new permanent sidekick, the one and only Marcie.
The eternally mutable Snoopy mostly shakes off his World War I Flying Ace identity and turns into Joe Cool, college hipster extraordinaire. And in three long sequences he writes a fan letter to his favorite author, Miss Helen Sweetstory, then goes on a journey to meet her, and finally enlists Charlie Brown's help when her latest opus, The Six Bunny-Wunnies Freak Out, falls afoul of censors. Plus, an introduction by Kristin Chenowith and much more!

Story and art by Charles M. Schulz.
Rerun Van Pelt takes his first terrifying journey on the back of his mom's bike. The schoolhouse building Sally used to talk to begins to answer back. Marcie "helps" Peppermint Patty prepare for a skating competition by designing her costume and styling her hair.
Plus, when Charlie Brown's baseball-sized rash forces him to wear a paper bag over his head, he discovers that he's suddenly more well-liked and successful. Also, Snoopy, Woodstock, and the gang enjoy several rounds of tennis - which is why the legendary Billie Jean King aces this volume's introduction.

We are midway through the 1970s and this volume features several benchmark storylines, including a "double track" sequence with two parallel narratives: Peppermint Patty competes in a Powderpuff Derby while Charlie Brown finally meets his baseball idol. There are also obedience school fiascos, waterbed dilemmas, and Marcie's unwanted suitor. All of these classic gags starring Snoopy, Schroeder, Lucy, Franklin, Rerun, and Sally are introduced by writer and comedian Robert Smigel.

Story and art by Charles M. Schulz.
The world's greatest comic strip enters the '80s!
In volume 16 of The Complete Peanuts (softcover edition), Snoopy's long-lost brother "Marbles" joins the cast of characters - and is baffled by Snoopy's un-doglike behavior. Charlie Brown lives up to his hard-luck reputation: on the day of the biggest game of the season, he loses the baseball field! In other stories, Peppermint Patty witnesses the "butterfly miracle," Linus and Sally spar over whether he is indeed her "Sweet Babboo," the Van Pelts foray into an ill-fated farming venture, and two of the most eccentric characters from later Peanuts years - the hyper-aggressive Molly Volley and the whiny "Crybaby" Boobie - return for a rematch. Lynn Johnston (For Better or For Worse) introduces this volume.

Volume 17 - 1st printing. "1983-1984!"
Story and art by Charles M. Schulz.
As Peanuts hits the mid-'80s, Peppermint Patty and Snoopy's brother Spike take starring roles.
This volume of The Complete Peanuts is particularly romance-heavy as the Charlie Brown/Peppermint Patty/Marcie triangle heats up; love blossoms between two of the "Beagle Scout" birds; and Linus still refuses to be Sally's "Sweet Babboo"! Meanwhile, Peppermint Patty goes to the "sleep disorders center" to find out why she's always nodding off in class; Charlie Brown becomes, in his worst baseball-related humiliation to date, the mascot of Peppermint Patty's "Pelicans"; Linus finally gives up his security blanket once and for all; and Snoopy's brother Spike pops up in hilarious, deadpan vignettes set in far-flung Needles, California.
The Complete Peanuts is the reprint project that launched a renaissance in comic strip publishing and the only place Charles M. Schulz's classic has ever been collected in its entirety. Featuring impeccable production values, each volume of this series features two successive years of newspaper strips (dailies and Sundays), plus bonus material such as celebrity introductions, interviews, and a brief biography of Schulz himself.

Volume 4 - 1st printing. "1941-1942!" Story and art by Milton Caniff. America's premiere adventure comic strip thunders to its pre-War crescendo in an October, 1941 storyline so powerful, creator Milton Caniff was forced to take to the radio airwaves to explain why he chose to shock the nation with the death of a major character. Story and art by Howard Cruse.
Originally published in The Advocate during the 1980s, Howard Cruse's Wendel is widely considered the first gay comic strip to be featured in mainstream media. A topical and heartfelt chronicle of one gay man's journey through the often-rocky Reagan/Bush years, the strip followed the adventures of Wendel Trupstock, his boyfriend Ollie, and an unforgettable cast of supporting characters presented in realistic depictions of relationships, politics, personal struggles, and public triumphs.
The Complete Wendel contains every episode of the series and includes a new foreword by Cruse, who contextualizes the story of the creation and publication of the strip within the often tumultuous political zeitgeist of the 1980s.

Story and art by Jim Toomey.
What happens in Sherman's Lagoon doesn't always stay in Sherman's Lagoon. In this, the fourteenth collection of Sherman's Lagoon comic strips, we examine the once-taboo subject of sea turtle courting rituals and conclude that, although sea turtles may be remarkable navigators, it's a cruel exercise in Darwinism when they show up at the right place without the right pickup line.

By Bill Griffith.
Zippy the Pinhead is a pop culture icon.
The surrealist-leaning character is one of the most recognizable figures on the newspaper pages, seen by tens of millions of people a day.
Syndicated by King Features since 1986, Zippy is read in hundreds of daily newspapers across the country, while the Pinhead's trademark non-sequitur, "Are we having fun yet?," has become so often repeated it's in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. His likeness has been graffitied on the Berlin Wall and aped for Saturday Night Live's classic "Conehead" sketches. In this new, almost square-shaped Zippy collection, Zippy visits his doppelganger atop the Leaning Tower of Pizza, talks Republicanism with several symbolic elephants, imagines he's in a Deputy Dawg cartoon and deconstructs King Kong - and that's just between breakfast and lunch.
He also meets Arnold Stang (the voice of "Top Cat"), stars in a 1940s Film Noir, hitch-hikes to Los Angeles to break into the television industry (with his mini-series adaptation of Allen Ginsburg's "Howl") and worships at the World's Largest Laundromat just outside Chicago.
