Number B 31, no date, circa 1940s. In the 1930s and 1940s before the advent of the ballpoint pen, fountain pens were the mainstay of the office. Ink blotters were common since these pens tended to have excess ink and needed blotting often. Many American companies, like Blue Coal, used blotters as advertising tools. Blue Coal was the main sponsor of The Shadow radio show, one of the top shows of its era and produced many of their ink blotters featuring the Shadow. The blotter side is a blue material with the advertising side printed in vivid color. Stock is stiff cardstock. 9-in. x 4-in., single sheet, full color.
