Captive American (1967 Topps) Captain America Parody 1
    • Consignment. 3% buyer's premium charged at checkout. Graded by MCS, not consignor.

Krazy Little Comics (1967 Topps): Captive American, is one of sixteen parody mini-comics originally produced as test market items in 1967, by the Topps Chewing Gum Company. They did not see full national distribution. All were written by Roy Thomas and feature Wally Wood cover and interior art. These minis spoof not only Marvel and DC super-heroes, but other comic characters as well, like the Phantom, Prince Valiant, and Tarzan. These possibly predate, or are at least contemporaneous with, Not Brand Ecch! #1 (08/1967), and are among the rarest of the Merry Marvel Marching Society era items. Full color, 2.5-in. x 3.5-in., no cover price.

1st printing. By Thomas Forget. This book tells the story of Captain America, along with Superman, one of the most recognizable comic book superheroes. With enthusiasm that jumps off the page, the author introduces readers to the struggling writers and artists who created Captain America in the 1930s, when the United States was on the brink of World War II. The author explains how and why they infused Cap with American ideals, creating a hero unlike any others in the comic book pages. Readers will also see how the original twists and turns in the Captain America story lines have kept readers interested for nearly seventy years. Brave and bold, but also thoughtful and fallible, Captain America reflects the complex character of America itself. Hardcover, 50 pages, 7 3/4-in. x 9 1/4-in., text with full color illustrations and photos. Cover price $21.99.

Deep Space and Sacred Time Star Trek in the American Mythos HC (1998) 1-1ST

1st printing. What could possibly account for the scope and longevity of the Star Trek phenomenon? With legions of impassioned fans and a life span of 30 years and counting, the Star Trek television and film corpus has made Gene Roddenberry's creation nothing less than an American mythology. Deep Space and Sacred Time examines for the first time in book-length form the many ways Star Trek has served as a mythic reference point for American society--and suggests that an understanding of this might help us to see ourselves more clearly as a culture. Moreover, this thoughtful and thought-provoking work posits that Star Trek offers its audience a sense of hope and, in the setting of an orderly cosmos, the possibility for empowerment. Hardcover, 264 pages, Text Only. Cover price $27.95.

1st printing. Edited by Qiana Whitted. Some comics fans view the industry's Golden Age (1930s-1950s) as a challenging time when it comes to representations of race, an era when the few black characters appeared as brutal savages, devious witch doctors, or unintelligible minstrels. Desegregating Comics assembles a team of leading scholars to explore how debates about the representation of blackness shaped both the production and reception of Golden Age comics. Some essays showcase rare titles like Negro Romance and consider the formal innovations introduced by black comics creators like Matt Baker and Alvin Hollingsworth, while others examine the treatment of race in the work of such canonical cartoonists as George Herriman and Will Eisner. Golden Age comics artists, writers, editors, distributors, and readers engaged in heated negotiations over how blackness should be portrayed, and the outcomes of those debates continue to shape popular culture today. Softcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 326 pages, PC. Cover price $34.95.
