Phantoms of the Louvre HC (2014 NBM) 1-1ST

1st printing. Story and art by Enki Bilal. Superstar European SF and Fantasy comics artist Enki Bilal revisits the Louvre in twenty-two portraits. He imagines 22 fates of men, women and children whose lives have been affected by a work of art. They haunt the halls of the Louvre. They are long dead, often violently. They are a Roman legionary, a muse, a painter, a German officer. Each, one day, met a painter or a sculptor and was their model. Bilal startlingly brings them back to life. Both a work of Fantasy and a masterful homage, this was presented in a special exhibition in the Louvre in early 2013. Hardcover, 9-in. x 12-in., 144 pages, full color. Cover price $29.99.

1st printing. Story and art by Hirohiko Araki. Rohan, a young mangaka, meets a beautiful mysterious young woman with a dramatic story. Seeing him draw, she tells him of a cursed 200-year-old painting using the blackest ink ever known from a 1,000 year old tree the painter had brought down without approval from the Emperor who had him executed for doing so. The painting meanwhile had been saved from destruction by a curator of the Louvre. Rohan forgets this story as he becomes famous but ten years later, visiting Paris, he takes the occasion to try and locate the painting. Little does he know how violently powerful the curse of it is until he has the museum unearth it from deep within its archival bowels. Hardcover, 8-in. x 11-in., 128 pages, full color. NOTE: This is a Japanese-style GN and is meant to be read right-to-left. Cover price $19.99.

1st printing. Written by C.L.R. James. Art by Nic Watts and Sakina Karimjee. A stirring graphic novel of the Haitian Revolution written by renowned Trinidadian historian C.L.R. James and adapted by artists Nic Watts and Sakina Karimjee. This impassioned and beautifully drawn book dramatically recounts 'one of the great epics of revolutionary struggle and achievement'-the Haitian Revolution of 1794-1803. It is also the stirring-and incredible-story of Toussaint Louverture, a man born into slavery who rose to become the revolt's indispensable leader. Perhaps more than any other figure from the Age of Revolution, he gave voice to a truly universal call for liberty and equality. This page-turning visual narrative surrounds Toussaint with fiery radicals like Haitian leader Dessalines and intransigent French like Napoleon. Above all, the book portrays the world-changing force of the enslaved Haitian people, for, as James famously wrote, "Toussaint did not make the revolution. It was the revolution that made Toussaint." Softcover, 272 pages, full color. Cover price $24.95.

1st printing. Written by Rick Kirkman. Art by Jerry Scott. Child-rearing reaches an entirely new level of delightfully messy chaos in Baby Blues: Wetter, Louder, Stickier. Battle-ready and perpetually exhausted, Daryl and Wanda team up to navigate a new front of challenges, like Zoe's enthusiasm over the "Smoochy Boyz" concert, deciphering baby Wren's attempts at language, and determining Hammie's place as a colon in the school play (whether "colon" refers to punctuation or digestion remains undetermined). Armed with "performance-enhancing substances" (a.k.a., chocolate donuts), the perfectly normal MacPherson family will surely bring a barrage of smiles and laughter to familiar fans with their perfectly chaotic lives. Softcover (Horizontal Format), 11-in. x 9-in., 216 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.99.
