In 1895 the Lumière brothers invented the cinematograph. Less than a year later, 23-year-old Alice Guy, the first female filmmaker in cinema history, made The Cabbage Fairy, a 60-second movie, for Léon Gaumont, and would go on to direct more than 300 films before 1922.
Her life is a shadow history of early cinema, the chronicle of an art form coming into its own. A free and independent woman who rubbed shoulders with masters such as Georges Méliès and the Lumières, she was the first to define the professions of screenwriter and producer. She directed the first feminist satire, then the first sword-and-sandal epic, before crossing the Atlantic in 1907 to the United States and becoming the first woman to found her own production company.
Guy died in 1969, excluded from the annals of film history.

Walt Kelly, Alex Toth, Dan DeCarlo, George Carlson, MAD men Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Davis and Dave Berg, and many more visit Wonderland! You'll be astonished to see Alice gruesomely starring in the banned horror comic book stories of the 1950s, as the basis of a romance comic, riding on a flying saucer, meeting Santa Claus, as a teeny-bopper, hanging out with famous comic characters... The fascinating-sometimes bizarre-comics, the rare original art, a special introduction by Mark Burstein, president of Lewis Carroll Society of North America, and a revealing foreword by award-winning comics historian Craig Yoe make this book truly a wonder! Alice in Comicland will leave you grinning like the Cheshire cat! Hardcover, 168 pages, full color. Cover price $29.99.

1st printing. by Michiyo Hayano. Lewis Carroll's universally known story of a little girl who falls down a rabbit hole into a magical wonderland is given a new spin in this lushly illustrated version of the classic tale. Alice was sitting in a field reading when a white rabbit scampered by. She didn't know what was odder: that the rabbit was running on its hind legs, wearing a jacket, and carrying a pocket watch, or that it was talking, shouting, "I'm late! I'm late!" From the moment she decided to follow the rabbit into his rabbit hole, Alice was transported to a fantastical place called Wonderland, where anything was possible. All of the familiar characters are here: the Hatter, the March Hare, the Cheshire Cat, the Caterpillar, and the wicked Queen of Hearts. A new line of children's storybooks, the POP Wonderland series is rendered in a friendly pastel palette, with engaging art that brings familiar fairy tales to life in a brand-new way. Parents know their children love anime and manga, and the art style in these books will connect with moms and dads looking to get their child a book drawn in a modern style, yet telling a story they can identify with from their own childhoods. Hardcover (Horizontal Format), 10 1/2-in. x 8 1/2-in., 32 pages, full color. Cover price $16.95.
