From Shadow to Light Life and Art of Mort Meskin HC (2010) 1-1ST

1st printing. By Steven Bower. From Shadow to Light: The Life and Art of Mort Meskin is a coffee table art book and critical biography of one of the twentieth century's most influential and overlooked comic book artists. Meskin's career spanned both the Golden and Silver ages of comics, from the 1940s to the 1960s. His drawing, chiaroscuro technique, and storytelling are considered by connoisseurs of the form to be among the most sophisticated of his time. Following World War II he formed a studio with the legendary Jerry Robinson, co-creator of The Joker and Robin. He later worked for Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's company S&K Studio and with Stan Lee at Atlas (Marvel). From Shadow to Light compiles for the first time the best of Meskin's art from his comic book career, his post-comics career bin advertising, and his fine art. Many of the comics pages are scanned form the original art, thanks to the cooperation of the Meskin estate. Mort Meskin's story is one of perseverance and overcoming personal demons. It is the tale of the indomitable spirit of a true artist and innovator. From Shadow to Light: The Life and Art of Mort Meskin will finally set the record straight and add his name to the pantheon of comic book artists who helped create this distinctly American art form. Hardcover, 9 1/2-in. x 12-in., 220 pages, full color. Cover price $39.99.

Life of Che HC (2022 Fantagraphics) An Impressionistic Biography 1-1ST

    (see more images)

    1st printing.

Written by Hector German Oesterheld. Art and cover by Alberto Breccia and Enrique Breccia. Translated by Mena.

Life of Che is one of the most anticipated entries in Fantagraphics' The Alberto Breccia Library. Originally released as part of a graphic biography series in January 1969, it came out in Argentina only a year after Ernesto "Che" Guevara had died and reached an audience beyond comics readers. In the 1970s, the military government raided its publisher, destroying the means to reprint the book. It was a lost comic until a publisher in Spain restored it in 1987 - and never translated into English.

    Until now.

The book begins in Bolivia in 1967, then flashes back through Che's life - his childhood, his radicalizing motorcycle trip with Alberto Granado, his taking up of arms in Guatemala, his meeting with Fidel Castro, and his subsequent military and political maneuvers, ending in a fade-out to his death. Alberto Breccia and his son, Enrique, drew Life of Che. Enrique draws the Bolivia passages in a woodcut style, while Alberto depicts the flashbacks in his trademark, expressionistic black-and-white. It is primarily set in the field and with the people.

Héctor Germán Oesterheld (The Eternaut) blends his authorial voice with Che's first-person. Life of Che is imbued with a sense of immediacy, as both Che and, eventually, Oesterheld would meet their ends by a military government backed by the American CIA. As Pablo Turnes writes in his afterword, it is "the testament of someone consciously marching toward his revolutionary death."

    Hardcover, 88 pages, B&W.

    Cover price $19.99.

1st printing. Story and art by Joe Ollman. Mid-Life is the story of John, who at 40 becomes a father again with his much younger second wife, which results in a slow, painful attack by flowered baby bags and front-facing baby carriers on his former virility and self-identity. John always believed that age is a state of mind; however, his adult daughters, baby son, energetic wife, stressful job, house full of cats, and flabby body - complete with bloated stomach and sagging bosom - all lead John reluctantly to admit that he is having a mid-life crisis. The crisis drives John to yell at his wife, pick fights with his daughters, and miss deadlines at work that put his job on the line. He takes solace from the stress of everyday life with a seemingly harmless infatuation with the pretty children's performer, Sherry Smalls, who sings adoringly to him directly from his son's DVD. As their lives snowball, John's infatuation turns into obsession and a haphazard, fateful e-mail leads to a necessary reality check that neither John nor Sherry may have wanted, but that both will surprisingly welcome... 1st printing. Story and art by J Webster Sharp. 'Dentist Robs Women of Teeth' - 'Death Chair for Nice Old Man' - 'Mother Feeds Son Like Bird.' The British newspaper clipping collection of egalitarian George Ives, collected between 1892 and 1949, ranged from murder and theories of crime to cricket scores. He was fascinated by the unusual, the gothic, the sexual, and the melodramatic. In this graphic novel, acclaimed cartoonist J. Webster Sharp shares some of the most bizarre stories from his archives in silent comics form. With often shocking, visceral black and white artwork, the strangeness and eccentricity of the Edwardian era provides a backdrop for Sharp's own struggles with mental health. THE SCRAPBOOK OF LIFE AND DEATH is a fascinating, personal window into forgotten historical views of eccentric and socially transcendent and disturbing behaviors-and their resonance in life today. Andy A Factual Fairytale GN (2018 SelfMadeHero) The Life and Times of Andy Warhol 1-1ST

    1st printing.

    By Typex.

From the 32 canvas Campbell's Soup Cans to the Marilyn Diptych, Andy Warhol's silk-screen prints are the epitome of Pop Art: witty, gimmicky and unafraid of repetition. Obsessed with consumerism and the cult of celebrity, Warhol (1928-1987) exalted the "surface of things"-and yet he was a man of deep complexity. In Andy, Typex captures the remarkable life of the king of Pop Art, from his working-class upbringing in Pittsburgh to the dizzying heights of his celebrity. Spanning Warhol's early career as a commercial illustrator, his relationship with the Velvet Underground, and the development of his own instantly recognizable style, Andy is an exhilarating portrait of a transcendent artist and a master self-promoter.

    Softcover, 8-in. x 11-in., 568 pages, full color.
