Files Magazine Spotlight on the Superheroes File: Superman and Spider-Man On Screen SC (1986) 1-1ST
    • Discounted from $9.00.

Volume 1 - 1st printing. By Ed Gross. Comic book super heroes first came into their own at the beginning of World War II, when America felt overwhelmed both at home and overseas. It somehow seemed that more than a mere man was needed to fight for truth, justice, and the American way. Superman was the first and greatest of those heroes. Fittingly, he was also one of the first, and most successful heroes to hit the silver screen and television. Two decades later a revival took place in the ranks of the super hero. Again America seemed to be floundering, our international enemies racing ahead of us in the sciences and turmoil filling our hearts at home. This time a small publisher of horror comics tried their hand at creating a guardian who believed that with great power came great responsibility. He was a hero with human foibles, not really more than human, just gifted with great power. Spider-Man had arrived and he would help to make Marvel Comics the largest publisher of its kind in the country. SUPERMAN and SPIDER-MAN, flagships for the two largest publishers of four color fantasies in America. Both of them have had interesting careers in celluloid as well as on newsprint. In this book, Edward Gross, a contributing columnist to the nation's largest magazine about comics, COMICS FEATURE, as well as to a variety of publications about film, begins to tell the story. Softcover, 8 1/2-in. x 11-in., 58 pages, B&W. Cover price $5.95.

Krazy Little Comics (1967 Topps): Stuporman is one of sixteen parody mini-comics originally produced as test market items in 1967, by the Topps Chewing Gum Company. They did not see full national distribution. All were written by Roy Thomas and feature Wally Wood cover and interior art. These minis spoof not only Marvel and DC super-heroes, but other comic characters as well, like the Phantom, Prince Valiant, and Tarzan. These possibly predate, or are at least contemporaneous with, Not Brand Ecch! #1 (08/1967), and are among the rarest of the Merry Marvel Marching Society era items. Superman is Jewish? HC (2012 Free Press) 1-1ST
    • Discounted from $11.00.
    • Discounted from $11.00.

1st printing. Written by Harry Brod. In Superman Is Jewish? Harry Brod reveals the links between Jews and superheroes in a penetrating investigation of iconic comic book figures. He describes how the role of each hero reflects the evolution of the Jewish place in American culture - an alien in a foreign land, like Superman; a figure plagued by guilt for not having saved his family, like Spider-Man; outsiders persecuted for being different (X-Men); a nice, smart guy afraid people won't like him when he's angry (the Hulk). Brod blends humor and sharp observation as he considers these well-known figures' overtly and discreetly Jewish characteristics and talks about how their creators integrated their Jewish identities and their creativity. Hardcover, 224 pages, Text Only. Cover price $25.00.

Benjamin would always proudly say, "I'm Jewish. Like Superman!" Assuming that Judaism is some kind of super power and Hebrew is akin to the Kryptonian language, Benjamin believes each of his family members is a superhero. Until, like Krypton, his world is shattered. After learning of the link between being circumcised and his religion, Ben decides to hide his heritage from everyone. Caught between the desire to avoid disappointing his Jewish father and his desire to understand his Catholic mother, Ben has to find a way to abandon his secret identity for a very public one. Humorous, timeless and universal, this personal and poignant story of acceptance and understanding shows how we all must learn to love the hero within ourselves.
