Painted cover by Norman Saunders. Stories and art by Dan De Carlo, Rudy Lapick, Henry Sharp, Mike Sekowsky, Harry Anderson and Irv Novick. Sometimes listed as GI Joe #4. Neither a tie-in with the later toy line/cartoon nor a grim war comic, this first-gen GI Joe focused on lighthearted tales of military life. The Yardbirds, featuring Pvts. Windy and Whitey, was straight-up comedy of the Beetle Bailey/Sad Sack variety. While Joe and the Sarge are assigned to a United Nations unit, a French sergeant makes life miserable with his attention to dress protocol and dangerous command decisions. Russian agents (dressed like The Shadow) seek top-secret documents, but are impeded at every step by clueless Pvts. Windy and Whitey, in a story by future Archie legend Dan De Carlo. Joe and the Sarge encounter the beautiful spy known as the Korean Mata Hari, and learn that she's from Brooklyn. Attack at Dawn; G.I. Giggles; Korean Mata Hari; Ambushed!; Trainee Tips; Fire Fight; The Yardbirds: Police Detail; Admiral G.I. Joe; The Man Who Boasted! 52 pages, Full Color. Cover price $0.10.
