Stan's Weekly Express (or WE, for short) was a weekly adzine published from 1969 to 1973 by Stanley Blair of Houston, Texas. It was a direct forerunner of the Comics Buyer's Guide. Blair founded the WSA (short for Stan's Weekly Express Seal of Approval) to serve as a guard against mail fraud for the blossoming comic fandom industry. Star-Studded 17 - Summer 1971 Issue title is just "Star Studded" - no "Comics" in the title. Format: Offset/Lithograph process Wrap-around binding with staples in center. Original price was $1 - price increase of 25 cents from last issue. First issue with a full color painted cover. The cover is by Jerry Mayes. Back cover by Sam Grainger features the Warrior of Llarn. "Let's Talk It Over!" has letters from Rick Manugian, Billy Leavell, Harry Warner Jr. Issue also has "Behind the Swords," in which "prominent sword and sorcery authors...share their thoughts on the 'hows and whys'" of their sword and sorcery creations. This issue features Gardner F. Fox discussing Kothar the Mighty and John Jakes discussing 'Dark Pilgrimage.' Stories:"The Knight and the Barbarian!" Comic story with script and art by Alan Weiss "Warrior of Llarn" A comic adaptation of Gardner F. Fox's novel "Warrior of Llarn" with script by Roy Thomas and art by Sam Grainger. The story features the first double page color spread for a comic story in Star-Studded Comics. "Siren Defeats Excel!" Comic story by Ron Foss. Only "horizontal" story to be done in Star-Studded Comics. Real-life photos are also used in the story.
