From the start, the ongoing ORION series has proven that writer/artist Walter Simonson has a keen mastery of the characters that populate the "Fourth World" created by comics legend Jack Kirby. But that's not to say that Simonson is the only person capable of handling those iconic figures and, beginning with ORION #3, the magnanimous Simonson begins sharing the spotlight in backup features written by him and others and illustrated by some of the rest of the best artists the comic-book field has to offer. And to start things off right, the backup story in ORION #3 is drawn by none other than Frank Miller (BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, Sin City, 300)! The 6-page story tells the incredible, not-for-the-faint-of-heart story of Orion's fierce and horrifying birth, revealing details of Orion's mother Tigra's treachery against Darkseid and Darkseid's own, unforgettable revenge against mother and son alike. Future issues are planned that will feature other stories of Orion and his fellow New Gods, illustrated by an array of artists that includes Dave Gibbons, Howard Chaykin, Erik Larsen, and many more! Cover price $2.50.

Volume 72 - 1st printing. "Jutland 1916!" Written by Charles London. Art by Howard Gerrard. The only major fleet engagement of World War I, the Battle of Jutland has been surrounded by controversy ever since. The British public felt Admiral Jellicoe had failed - a reaction rooted in a hundred years of the 'Nelson cult', a conviction that anything short of a Trafalgar-style annihilation was letting the side down. True, the German Fleet had sunk more ships and suffered fewer casualties, but the British had forced them to disengage and run for port and were still cruising off Denmark spoiling for a fight. This title recounts in detail how on an early summer's evening in 1916, the two fleets clashed head to head: the events that followed would spark a polemic that still rages today. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $19.95.

Volume 73 - 1st printing. "Operation Compass 1940!" Written by Jon Latimer. Art by Jim Laurier. The first battle of the desert war, Operation Compass was originally envisaged as a spoiling attack, combined with a reconnaissance in force to disrupt the Italian forces that had advanced into Egypt in September 1940. Lt Gen. Richard O'Connor launched what amounted to a British 'Blitzkrieg'. In less than two months the British forces swept 500 miles along the coast of North Africa. 7th Armoured Division raced across the desert to cut off the retreating Italians, and O'Connor's men destroyed 9 Italian divisions, and took 130,000 prisoners. In March 1941 General Rommel and the Afrikakorps landed at Tripoli. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $19.95.

Volume 19 - 1st printing. " Sunderland Squadrons of World War 2!" Written by Jon Lake. Art by Chris Davey. The elegant Sunderland was the RAF's staple maritime patrol aircraft throughout WW2. Crucial in the Battle of the Atlantic, the Sunderland was instrumental in defeating the U-Boat menace which threatened to starve the UK into submission. Nicknamed the Flying Porcupine due to its heavy armoury of 14 guns, the Sunderland proved an immediate success in battle. Aside from its worldwide use with the RAF, it saw action with the RAAF, RNZAF and RCAF. This is the first book devoted to the Sunderland's WW2 service to be published in over a decade. Softcover, 112 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $22.95.

Volume 20 - 1st printing. " TBD Devastator Units of the US Navy!" Written by Barrett Tillman. Art by Tom Tullis. The first monoplane aircraft ordered by the US Navy for carrier operations, the Douglas TBD Devastator was designed to fulfil a requirement for a new torpedo bomber. Just 129 were built, and when it entered service it was the most modern aircraft of its type anywhere in the world. Its only real taste of action came on 4 June 1942 in the pivotal Battle of Midway, when 35 were shot down in a clash with Japanese A6M Zero fighters. The aircraft was replaced by the Grumman Avenger weeks later. Softcover, 98 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $22.95.

Volume 26- 1st printing. "US Paratrooper 1941-45!" Written by Carl Smith. Art by Mike Chappell. In Sicily, Normandy, and in the frozen hills of the Ardennes, America's airborne warriors proved themselves some of the toughest and most determined soldiers of World War 2. What made these soldiers so special? How were they recruited, how did they learn to jump and fight? What special tactics and equipment did they use? This title looks at what it was like to be one of the United States' airborne elite, through the experiences of the soldiers themselves. It is the story of the men who invariably led the way; the soldiers who flew to battle and walked home. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.

cover by mark buckingham. paul jenkins/mark buckingham/dan green. ? THE SCOOP: Marvel's top hero gets a top creative team: new penciler Mark Buckingham (Batman, Titans) and new writer Paul Jenkins (INCREDIBLE HULK, INHUMANS)! ? THE STORY: At his lowest ebb, Spider-Man has finally accepted the reality of his wife's death. He's been consoled by his friends and family, but there's still one person he must make peace with?his long gone Uncle Ben. This is a story that cuts to the heart of the character as Peter Parker flashes back to the happiest times of his checkered life, revealing never-before-seen moments in one of comicdom's most cherished characters. Be there for a bittersweet and humorously optimitstic tale which catches our star-crossed hero at a crossroads?and acts as a superb beginning for the new team of Jenkins and Buckingham! ? THE WRITER SPEAKS: Will we be seeing much of Peter's supporting cast in his tales? Says Jenkins: "They're extremely important. I always remember all the cool old Stan Lee/Steve Ditko or the Lee/John Romita stories in which Peter constantly had to juggle his school work and his girlfriends and go off to battle the bad guy and somehow make it home in time for dinner. This always seemed so important because his supporting cast were so interesting. We cared about whether or not he'd end up with Gwen or Mary Jane. Or whether or not he'd break Flash's nose without letting on that he had super strength. Because they lived and breathed as much as he did." What will Jenkins stress in his Spidey stories? "To me, it's all about character, character, character," he stated. "There are certain elements that should always be in a Spidey comic: action, humor, fisticuffs, bad guys with outrageous costumes, crazy futuristic weaponry, boatloads of gorgeous women... and Aunt May's meat loaf. So, never fear, those elements will be in the book. But if anyone has ever read my stuff they'll know I feel it's very important to take time to understand the characters." And speaking of characters, what does he think of our main man? "Spider-Man is so full of potential," stated Jenkins. "He's such a tragic figure because he's striving to rectify a mistake he once made?namely the death of his Uncle Ben?but there's no way he can make up for it. The only way would be to somehow bring Uncle Ben back to life, and that can't happen. But this poor guy, he's going to keep trying no matter what... and while he's at it, he'll take the occasional moment to thumb his nose at all the obstacles placed in his way. What a great character." Cover price $2.99.
