1st printing. By Jason Barr. The Kaiju (strange monster or strange beast) film genre has a number of themes that go well beyond the "big monsters stomping on cities" motif. Since the seminal King Kong (1933) and the archetypal Godzilla (1954), kaiju has mined the subject matter of science run amok, militarism, capitalism, colonialism, consumerism and pollution. This critical examination of kaiju considers the entirety of the genre-the major franchises, along with less well known films like Kronos (1957), Monsters (2010), and Pacific Rim (2013). The author examines how kaiju has crossed cultures from its original folkloric inspirations in both the U.S. and Japan and how the genre continues to reflect national values to audiences. Softcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 212 pages, B&W. Cover price $35.00.

1st printing. Story and art by Osvaldo Medina. Filming on a remote virgin island leads to the discovery of a mysterious native with a heart as large as his body. Taken willingly to the Big City, he'll soon find out there's a thin line between the fame and glory he's been promised and the show business circus he's been thrown into. In spite of the obvious nod, Kong the King couldn't be further from a simple re-visitation of the cult-classic film. It's a whole new animal, a twisted roller coaster of emotional depth. Volume 8 - 1st printing. "1934: Krazy Kat - King Features Essentials: Book 1!"
Story and Art by George Herriman.
Much attention has been paid to Herrriman's Sunday full-page comics, yet it is in the daily Krazy Kat strips that the cartoonist most frankly illustrates many of his major themes, especially the shifting nature of social identity. The 1934 strips reprinted in this book fit anyone's definition of "essential." They show Krazy Kat at top speed, ever-changing, endlessly inventive, with language that sparkles with double meanings and more in lines such as "his malady drills me to my sole." The year includes homages to old jokes and bricks, followed by playful references to sex, drink, and even drugs. The daily Krazy Kat strips are often Herriman's most personal works and standouts in this year include Krazy Kat's attempt to write a memoir and the Kat's quietly waiting for the last leaf of "ottim" to fall (a tender scene that finds echoes in Charles Schulz's drawing Linus admiring the last autumn's leaf stubborn spirit). It could also be argued that the daily is more accessible to the new reader. Herriman biographer Michael Tisserand provides an insightful introduction.
Hardcover (Horizontal Format), 12-in. x 4-in., 328 pages, B&W.
Cover price $29.99.
