The cartoon was created to help educate the wealthy newspaper readers and show them the realities of living in poverty. Outcault's aim was to make these wealthy readers more sympathetic to the plight of the poor. The Yellow Kid and its social commentary also contributed to the coining of the term "yellow journalism."
