She gets a reply from Les, who invites her to travel to Texas to meet him. While on the train, Cindy opens (too late) his last letter, which tells her not to come. Stranded in town until the next day, she agrees to stay with sheriff Bill and his sister Mary. She is shocked to see Les on their ranch. Les is Bill's brother and wrote to Cindy as a joke. However, Bill and Cindy fall in love and she decides to stay. Plus: "I Had a Second Chance!" - Mary is unhappily married to the ill-tempered drunk Henry. Her only solace is listening to Rod's nighttime radio program. On her wedding anniversary, Mary asks Rod to broadcast a dedication, but the jealous Henry attacks the disc jockey. Henry is killed fleeing from the police. Rod courts widow Mary and promises to make her happy. Her widowed mother suspects Bob may be a fortune-hunter, since Janice and her mother are financially well-off. Bob switches his attentions to Janice's mother, and proposes marriage. Mrs. Pearson explains she and Janice are broke, and Bob angrily departs. Janice learns her mother made up the story of their poverty to expose Bob's true motives. Plus: "Doubtful Kisses" with art by Iger Shop - Ed had proposed to Sally when she was 18 years old, even though he was 35. She fell in love instead with Howard, closer to her own age. Years later, they are happily married and have a daughter. Sally is invited to a dinner honoring Ed; he's now old and bald, though successful. Sally realizes she made the right choice. Also: "How Can I Love You?" with art by Iger Shop - Marion vows revenge on Andrew Morris, whose actions caused her father to go to prison on charges of embezzlement. She falls in love with Paul, Andrew's son and is conflicted. However, Andrew shows her a letter written by her father, taking full responsibility for his crimes. Marion and Paul will marry. And: "Her Man or Mine?" with art by Iger Shop - Military hero David returns to his home town and is reunited with his girlfriend Elaine. David was previously married to Rose, but thinks this was annulled. Learning David intends to run for mayor, Rose reappears and demands money for a divorce (saying she'd lied about the annulment). But David proves she's lying now, that they are no longer married. He warns Rose to get out and stay out of his life. Her latest victim is soldier Ted, who inherits a farm. Jane agrees to marry him, but she's exposed as the "camp chiseler" by another soldier. Ted defends Jane and she admits she really loves him. Plus: "Love Blind" - Poor orphan Sally grows up starved for affection. She falls for shifty character Ace. When Ace is arrested for robbery, Sally tries to help him escape but winds up in prison herself. She realizes her blind craving for love caused her to make a poor decision. Also: "Money-Mad Baby" - Ellen flirts with her much older boss Mr. Swan and accepts expensive gifts from him. Although she loves sailor Dave, Ellen wants a rich husband. Shoshone feels Jack's friends are only nice to her when he's around. She invites Jack's friend Dick in for tea, only to be mauled by the lecherous man. Jack comes home and saves his wife. His other friends apologize for being standoffish and promise to include her from now on. Plus: "Accused" with art by Pete Morisi - Danny is jealous of Kathy's friendship with petty crook Lou, who gives her expensive gifts. After the two men fight, Danny is signed by boxing promoter Chick and turns pro. Lou tries to use Kathy to set up Danny for a kidnapping, so he'll lose a big fight, but Kathy tells Danny about the scheme. Danny says he loves Kathy and they will face the future together. Also: "Passion" with art by Tewks - Ann runs a wrecking company, which works alongside Dan and Frenchy's companies on a big job. Ann and Dan fall in love. Ann prevents Frenchy from stabbing Dan in a work dispute, but when a fire breaks out, they all work together to save themselves and the site. And: "Heartaches" - Evelyn leaves her drunken and abusive husband Charles and gets a job at a newspaper, working for editor Ted. Charles commits suicide. Evelyn turns down Ted's offer of a date. He rescues her from a mugger; later, he's attacked by gangsters after a story about political corruption. Evelyn witnesses this assault and realizes she loves him. After a chance meeting with Ralph, Carol decides to break up with Mal. A jealous Larry threatens to kill Mal but Ralph steps in and rescues Carol. They reconcile. Jill is swept off her feet by Wayne, a rich oilman from Texas. Steve discovers Wayne is actually Louis Menzer, a con man who wants to steal her client list and blackmail the lonely people. Hollingsworth - Adrina's father trains her to be a great trapeze artist like her late mother. Adrina accepts a dinner invitation from Walter, although the man had mocked the circus performers, which upsets her fellow aerialist Armand. Adrina falls for Walter but discovers he's just using her and calls her a "circus freak" behind her back. A distraught Adrina nearly dies during her act but Armand saves her and they will be married. Nancy becomes jealous of Michael's relationship with star Karen, but when Karen leaves the show to get married, Nancy plays the leading part and is a success. Michael apologizes for neglecting her. Plus: "Man Crazy" with art by Ken Landau - The "flirtatious and party seeking" Joan has many boyfriends and wants to find a rich husband, while her "pretty but homey" sister Connie is happy with Andy. Joan rejects the lecherous Marty and decides to steal Andy from her sister. Insanely jealous Marty catches Andy and Joan on a date and tries to kill them, but dies himself in an automobile accident. To reunite Connie and Andy, Joan pretends he was nothing but a passing fling to her. She hopes to find real love herself, some day. Also: "Mama's Girl" with art by Marty Elkin - Carol feels suffocated by her widowed mother, who manages the personnel department of the store where they both work, and encourages Carol to date only men who have bright futures. Carol falls in love with store employee Mike Harrison but her mother disapproves and has Mike fired. Carol decides to marry him and move to the new town where Mike now works, over the objections of her mother (who has now lost her own job due to her domineering ways). And: "Meant for Marriage" with pencils by Herb Familton - Susan refuses to marry Ted before his overseas military deployment, fearing he'll be killed. They break up. Vivian, a lady on a nearby park bench, tells Susan the story of her long-ago romance with Jim. She wanted to wait to marry until Jim finished law school and became successful. Vivian turns down other suitors, but Jim never comes back and one day she learns he married someone else. A lifelong spinster now, Vivian urges Susan to marry Ted right away and the young couple is happily reunited. After they're gone, Vivian greets her long-time husband, Jim. She lied! They're both arrested and sent to prison; after a year, Alice is released and moves to a small town where the local hospital desperately needs nurses. She falls in love with Mark, the hospital director and head surgeon. Jack is brought into the hospital for emergency surgery and dies on the operating table. Alice thinks she subconsciously killed him. She admits her past to Mark. Mark says he still loves her and Jack died as a result of his wounds. Plus: "Blues" with art by Tom Feelings - Singer Ellen is coached by pianist Roy and they become a popular musical act and also fall in love. Ellen leaves the act when offered a Broadway job, despite Roy's warning that she isn't ready. Failing on Broadway, Ellen is forced to perform in sleazy dives. One day, Roy shows up to accompany her. He also rescues her from the lecherous club manager. Roy and Ellen restart their career and romance. Also: "Love Bait" with art by Ed Smalle - Jane learns her brother Rob is returning after 2 years' military service. She discovers Rob's girlfriend Ann has fallen in love with Bart in the meantime. Bart isn't serious about Ann, so Jane pretends to fall for him to cause a break-up. Rob and Ann arrive and catch Bart and Jane together. Jane's plan works: Bart is sent packing, and Rob and Ann get married. And: "Gang Moll" with art by Ed Smalle - Meg is a nightclub hatcheck girl whose boss Rico constantly propositions her. She really loves police detective Tim, but they can't get married until he receives a promotion. Proving Rico is a crime boss would solve the problem. Meg pretends to break up with Tim and becomes Rico's girlfriend. She tips off the police to the gang's activities but Rico learns of this and sets up an ambush. Meg is wounded while warning Tim and his men of the trap. Rico is arrested and Meg marries Tim at last. Plus: 2-page text story "Forgetfulness" by Edwin Green with illos by Don Heck. Chris confesses he really loves her and was only trying to ascertain her true nature. Plus: "Headstrong Woman" - Ad executive Helen and her boyfriend Jay vacation in the Bahamas. Her bossy and know-it-all manner results in them being taken prisoner on an isolated island by Mac, who is searching for buried treasure. Jay pretends to be fed up with Helen and joins Mac in his quest, but it's just a trick to defeat the criminal. Helen apologizes to Jay for her domineering manner and promises to treat him like an equal partner in their relationship from now on. Also: "False Bride" - Engaged for two years, Amy still refuses to marry Garry until their house is built and furnished and their finances are more secure. Garry breaks up with her and she dates womanizer Joey, who criticises her for leading him on and says Garry was right to dump her. Dolly promises Bart to straighten up, but soon afterwards goes with Buck to his family's beach house. Buck makes a pass at Dolly and complains when she first flirts with him, then rejects him. Bart arrives to take Dolly home and tells her they are through. Plus: "Love Thief" with art by Marty Elkin - Terry lives with her older sister Laura and Laura's husband Frank. Frank can't find a job so he's around the house all day while Laura works to support them. Terry and Frank fall in love but Terry feels guilty and breaks off their romance, even though she still loves him. Frank gets a job and his relationship with Laura improves. Terry decides to move out and begins to date an old school friend. Also: "Love Lesson" with art by Tewks - Jean's roommate Marylin is much more glamorous than she, and steals Jean's boyfriend Jack. Jean, Marylin, Jack, and Jack's friend Peter spend a weekend in a mountain cabin. Marylin decides to dump Jack for the wealthy Peter, whom Jean finds attractive. Peter says he'll play along with Marylin so Jack will see how fickle she is, and Jean can win Jack back. The plan works, except Jean doesn't want Jack, she wants Peter, and gets him in the end. And: "Love Is the Prize" with art by Tewks - Ronnie wins a singing contest in her hometown and moves to New York to take singing lessons from Paul. She leaves behind her boyfriend Mike. When Paul says he's attracted to her, Ronnie explains about Mike and Paul accepts this. However, Mike arrives unexpectedly and mistakenly thinks Ronnie loves Paul; he breaks their engagement and leaves. Ronnie realizes Paul is the one she loves after all. She dates Jim, a wealthy doctor 16 years older than her, over her sister Myra's objections. Jim and Terry get along well, but Myra has Jim pretend to be broke so Terry will break up with him. Myra tells Terry she wants Jim for her own. Terry realizes she loves Jim whether he's rich or not, and they reconcile. Plus: "Faith in Their Love" with art by Tewks - Jean and Bob fall in love but he's sent overseas on military duty for two years. His friend Hal, stationed with Bob, starts to correspond with Jean, and also intercepts Jean's letters to Bob and vice versa. When he's discharged, Bob confronts Jean and they discover Hal's dirty tricks. Hal gets a punch in the nose and Jean and Bob reconcile. Also: "Private Affair" with art by Tewks - Janie marries high school teacher Peter and soon becomes irritated at his low pay and heavy workload. She convinces her father to give Peter an executive position in his business, although Peter really prefers teaching. This new job improves their finances but Peter has even less time for Janie. She starts dating George, another employee of the firm. Peter asks for a divorce and returns to teaching. Janie realizes she truly loves Peter and doesn't want to change him. And: "Party Girl" with art by Marty Elkin - Unemployed Peg's roommate Ginnie convinces her to take a job as a "party girl," escorting visiting businessmen. Peg is humiliated when private detective Richie suspects her of stealing money from her clients, but they eventually fall in love. However, Richie's work makes him break dates with Peg and she agrees to go to another party. Her "date" gets fresh and she pushes him. The man hits his head and is knocked out.
