He went from a childhood of desperate poverty to international renown as an artist, business leader, educator, and philanthropist. He is recognized as the founder of the Famous Artists School. A self-taught artist, by the time of his death in 1965 he had established himself as one of the preeminent, highest paid illustrator of his day.
