View scanSpecial issue featuring legendary Prince Valiant creator HAL FOSTER and Liberty Meadows creator FRANK CHO! Comic Book Marketplace #89 features a major article on the life and career of HAL FOSTER, artist on Tarzan (1931-37) and Prince Valiant (1937-1980). Despite his standing as one of the pre-eminent comic strip artists of all time, no complete, well- researched biographies have been written about Foster. Now, author Brian Kane has written what will surely become the major reference work on his life and career in a new book from Vanguard Press. The book is due to hit this fall, and CBM #89 will contain a review of the book by Russ Cochran along with photos and excerpts from the book. What makes hot young artist FRANK CHO so popular with comic strip veterans like AL WILLIAMSON? His daily and Sunday Liberty Meadows strips (and their comic book counterpart) have regularly poked fun at classic comic strips (Peanuts, Cathy, Tarzan, and others, including Prince Valiant), but the established masters of the form seem to love him. What's behind the pop culture machine that is Frank Cho? Find out about that, the success of his recent coffee table books, and the final fate of Liberty Meadows in Comic Book Marketplace #89! It was way back in 1928 when Hollywood discovered a brand new star who was destined to become a worldwide favorite who would neve grow old. Born on a train going from Kansas City to Hollywood, his name was Mickey Mouse. Soon, his immense popularity at the Box Office led to a starring role in the daily comic strips, and then to the color Sunday sections. Mickey Mouse magazines and Big Little Books, wristwatches, Lionel train cars, and countless other commercial endorsements followed. He finally got his own regular comic book series with Walt Disney's Comics and Stories and Dell one-shots. As other genres of comics came and went, the popularity of Mickey, Donal Duck, and the other Disney characters remained strong with comic book readers. Revived in the 1980s and 90s by Bruce Hamilton's Gladstone Comics, these classic stories became available to a new generation of comic book readers. In CBM #95, publisher/entrepreneur Hamilton reviews this fascinating history with the help of CBM's own Michael Naiman, including 16 full color pages of classic Disney images. Don't miss it! Starting in the mid-1960s, fantasy artist Frank Frazetta exploded onto the scene with his illustrations for paperback books and Warren's Creepy and Eerie. Frazetta's work was wildly influential on a group of young artists just cutting their artistic teeth...artists like Jeffrey Jones, Berni Wrightson, Michael Kaluta, and Frank Brunner, to name a few...and in the 1970s each of these artists came into his own in the field of comic books. CBM #105 features an in-depth look at the art and careers of these young turks, who, although initially inspired by Frazetta, have gone on to carve names for themselves as comic book artists. Also including our regular features: That Wonderful Year... by Michelle Nolan ? NEW!, Funnies Farrago by R.C. Harvey, Nolan's Notebook by Michelle Nolan, Inspiration Central by Bill Baker, Oddball Comics by Scott Shaw!, Collectable Character Statues by Mike Wilbur, CBM Marketwatch by our Advisors, The Naiman Report by Michael Naiman, Marketplace Mail and much, much more! Soon after Action Comics #1 hit the newsstands in 1938, it became clear that comic books were the next big thing. Victor S. Fox was, at that time, an accountant for DC comics, and he lost no time in leaving DC and setting up his own comic titles, starting with Wonderman in Wonder Comics #1. After DC won a lawsuit that claimed that Wonderman was a rip-off of Superman, Fox quickly branched out into titles like Mystery Men, Fantastic, Science, Blue Beetle, Weird and The Flame. CBM #107 tells the story of Victor Fox from 1938 through the early 1950s. Also including our regular features! Magazine, PC $6.95 Cover price $6.95.

When we decided to feature comic book villains for our theme in CBM #109, we didn't realize what a good idea that was! That is, until we found that we had gathered way too much material to fit in one issue! So, crafty as always, we figured we had enough stuff for two issues! So we devoted CBM #109 to Golden Age villains and saved all the Silver Age to Modern Age villains for issue #111. If bad boys like Thanos, Dr. Doom and Kraven are your cup of tea, join us in CBM #111 as we sling mud on all our favorite nemeses. And don't forget our great columns like: "Nolan's Notebook" by Michelle Nolan, "Inspiration Central" by Bill Baker, "That Wonderful Year" by Michelle Nolan, "Collectable Character Statues" by Mike Wilbur, "CBM Market Reports" by the CBM Advisors, and "The Naiman Report" by Michael Naiman. We all know that EC's Tales From the Crypt, Vault of Horror and Haunt of Fear started a New Trend in comics which other publishers were quick to imitate. After being virtually eradicated by the Comics Code in the mid-1950s, horror comics have struggled back to the newsstand in the form of magazines like Creepy and Eerie in the 1960s and 1970s. What is the future of horror comics? That's the question we pose in Comic Book Marketplace #114. We've also got great columns by: Michelle Nolan ? Nolan's Notebook and That Wonderful Year; Bill Baker ? Inspiration Central; Pat Calhoun ? Weird Words; Michael Naiman ? The Naiman Report; Mike Wilbur ? Collectable Character Statues. After humble beginnings in the late nineteenth century, newspaper comic strips had become an important mass medium by 1920, the year of the first network radio broadcast. It didn't take radio long to become very popular. Then when newsstand comic books started appearing in the late 1930s, another new mass medium was born. All these media were voracious consumers of programming, and crossovers from one medium to another became the rule rather than the exception. CBM #119 examines the crossovers between network radio shows and comic books. Captain Marvel was created by C.C. Beck, right? No, it was Roscoe Fawcett, right? No, it was Al Allard or Ralph Daigh, right? No, it was Bill Parker, right? And what did Fred MacMurray have to do with it? And Pete Costanza? The correct answer is... all of the above played a role in creating the "Big Red Cheese," the "World's Mightiest Mortal," and our Will Murray will explain in a new major article about the rise and fall of Captain Marvel.
