  • Issue #40-1ST
New Vanguard SC (1993 Osprey Military) 40-1ST

Volume 40 - 1st printing. "American Civil War Artillery 1861–65 Part 2!" Written by Philip Katcher. Art by Tony Bryan. Because of the length of the coastline of the United States, from the beginning American ordnance and engineers placed an emphasis on heavy artillery mounted in coastal defences. The Union army organised its 'Heavy Artillery' into separate regiments, uniformed and equipped differently. While the Field Artillery was assigned across the fighting fronts Heavy Artillery units served the big guns in the forts and the defences of Washington. The Confederates did not differentiate types of artillery and those that became known as Heavy Artillery did so through informal association rather than formal designation. This book details the development and usage of the big guns. Softcover, 48 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $17.95.

Volume 56 - 1st printing. "Union River Ironclad 1861–65!" Written by Angus Konstam. Art by Tony Bryan. At the start of the American Civil War, neither side had warships on the Mississippi River, which was a vital strategic artery. In what would prove the vital naval campaign of the war, both sides fought for control of the river. While the Confederates relied on field fortifications and small gunboats, the Union built a series of revolutionary river ironclads. First commissioned in January 1862, these ironclads spent the next two years battling for control of the Mississippi, fighting in a string of decisive engagements that altered the entire course of the war. This book explains how these vessels worked, how they were constructed, how they were manned and how they were fought. Softcover, 48 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $17.95.

Also covered are the smaller field guns in the 3- and 6-pounder categories and the largest, the 12-pounder field gun. This title covers the design and development of the guns, the organisation of the troops and their operational histories. Softcover, 48 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $17.95.

Volume 72 - 1st printing. "Austrian Napoleonic Artillery 1792-1815!" Written by David Hollins. Art by Brian Delf. The Austrian artillery of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars was a creation of the renowned Lichtenstein system of the early 1750s. This weight system produced a series of weapons of 3-, 6- and 12-pdr. calibre along with 7- and 10-pdr. howitzers. In the 1780s they were joined by Cavalry artillery guns with their Wurst seats. In 1811 Austria also began the establishment of rocket troops based upon the British invention, whilst their heavy and siege pieces remained the 12 -,18- and 24-pdrs throughout the period. This book describes the system as well as its operational use during the Napoleonic Wars. Softcover, 48 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $17.95.

Softcover, 48 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $17.95.

  • Issue #90-1ST
New Vanguard SC (1993 Osprey Military) 90-1ST

Volume 90 - 1st printing. "Napoleonic Naval Armaments 1792–1815!" Written by Chris Henry. Art by Brian Delf. here were many elements to British Napoleonic naval success but one of the key factors was gunnery. Other countries developed different naval weapons to fit their maritime strategies. The French and Spanish systems developed on similar lines, while those of the Baltic navies tended to rely on smaller craft and weapons. Holland, during this period, was part of the French sphere of influence and this had an effect on the development of its naval weapons. This title describes the systems of all these countries as well as the fledgling navy of America, whose gunnery skills embarrassed the Royal Navy at the height of their dominance. Softcover, 48 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $17.95.

  • Issue #108-1ST
New Vanguard SC (1993 Osprey Military) 108-1ST

Volume 108 - 1st printing. "English Civil War Artillery 1642–51!" Written by Chris Henry. Art by Brian Delf. At the beginning of the English Civil War it was clear that artillery was to play a significant part in the conflict, as so many battles were fought by siege. Both Royalists and Parliamentarians raced to capture ordnance stores in urban areas such as London and Hull, realising that they would prove strategically decisive in the siege warfare that later developed. Illustrated with superb colour plates by Brian Delf, this book gives the reader an overview of the types of weapon used in this conflict and, more generally, how artillery was actually used in the seventeenth century. Softcover, 48 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $17.95.

Volume 133 - 1st printing. "Seven Days Battles 1862!" Written by Angus Konstam. Art by Stephen Walsh. When General Robert E. Lee took command of the Army of Northern Virginia, the Confederacy was in crisis. Lee changed all that in a brilliant, week-long campaign. On 26 June the Confederates struck, fighting two hard-fought battles in two days at Mechanicsville and Gaine's Mill. The ferocity of the Confederate assaults convinced McClellan that he was outnumbered. Unable to keep the Confederates at bay, the Union army was recalled to Washington. Despite losing a quarter of his men, Lee had saved Richmond, and inflicted a humiliating defeat on the Army of the Potomac. This book traces the course of this short yet crucial campaign. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 41 - 1st printing. "The War of 1812!" By Carl Benn. The War of 1812-1815 was a bloody confrontation that tore through the American frontier, the British colonies of Upper and Lower Canada, and parts of the Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Mexico. The conflict saw British, American, and First Nations' forces clash, and in the process, shape the future of North American history. This exciting new volume explains what led to America's decision to take up arms against Great Britain and assesses the three terrible years of fighting that followed on land and sea, where battles such as Lake Erie and Lake Champlain launched American naval traditions. Volume 45 - 1st printing. "The American Revolution 1774-1783!" By Daniel Marston. The American Revolution has been characterized politically as a united political uprising of the American colonies and militarily as a guerrilla campaign of colonists against the inflexible British military establishment. Daniel Marston argues that this belief, though widespread, is a misconception. He contends that the American Revolution, in reality, created deep political divisions in the population of the Thirteen Colonies, while militarily pitting veterans of the Seven Years' War against one another, in a conflict that combined guerrilla tactics and classic eighteenth century campaign techniques on both sides. The peace treaty of 1783 that brought an end to the war marked the formal beginning of the United States of America as an independent political entity. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $17.95.

  • Issue #6-1ST
Osprey Fortress Series SC (2003) 6-1ST

Volume 6 - 1st printing. "American Civil War Fortifications Part 1!" Written by Stephen Turnbull. Art by Peter Dennis. The landscape of 16th- and 17th-century Japan was dominated by the graceful and imposing castles constructed by the powerful ‘daimyo' of the period. In this the most turbulent era in Japanese history, these militarily sophisticated structures provided strongholds for the consolidation and control of territory, and inevitably they became the focus for many of the great sieges of Japanese history: Nagashino (1575), Kitanosho (1583), Odawara (1590), Fushimi (1600), Osaka (1615) and Hara (1638), the last of the battles that brought an end to a period of intense civil war. This title traces their development from the earliest timber stockades to the immense structures that dominated the great centres of Osaka and Edo. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $18.95.
