Volume 6 - 2nd and later printings. "French Foreign Legion Paratroops!" Written by Martin Windrow. Art by Kevin Lyles. The decision, in Spring 1948, to form two battalions of Foreign Legion paratroopers was prompted by the requirement for enlarged airborne forces in Indochina, and the healthy recruitment then employed by the Legion. There were some initial doubts. The Legion were known to be magnificent heavy infantry, but were felt by some to lack the flexibility and agility demanded by independent airborne operations. In the Legion itself there were some misgivings over the possible clash between the self-consciously exclusive 'para mentality', and the Legion's own very marked ésprit de corps. Over time, however, all these doubts evaporated with experience. Softcover,64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $17.95.

Volume 85 - 1st printing. "US Commanders of World War II Part 1!" Written by James Arnold Robert Hargis. Art by Darko Pavlovic. To be a successful commander requires experience, character, tenacity and boldness: the ability to establish a good rapport with both your staff and your men is also vital. The real test comes in combat though, where a large proportion of luck is involved - the luck to be in the right place at the right time - and lasting reputations can be formed in a very brief and frenetic period. The key US commanders of World War II were subject to (and often gratuitously fostered) the projection of their 'characters', exploiting the growing power of the media. This title examines the careers, personalities and fortunes of the key US Army and Air Force commanders of World War II. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.

Volume 131 - 1st printing. "The Condor Legion!" Written by Carlos Caballero Jurado. Art by Ramiro Bujeiro. The Condor Legion was the expeditionary force of soldiers and airmen sent by Hitler to aid Franco's Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War. The Germans used the war as an opportunity to develop equipment and tactics, and their force included not only instructors, but also combat units of artillery, tanks and aircraft. These units tested guns, tanks and planes and perfected techniques which were used in the 1940 Blitzkrieg. Many of officers prominent in the early campaigns of World War II won their first successes in Spain. This book details the Legion and its unique uniform and insignia. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.

Volume 143 - 1st printing. "Canadian Airborne Forces since 1942!" Written by Bernd Horn PhD, and Michel Wyczynski. Art by Carlos Chagas. Canada's 1st Parachute Battalion earned a fearsome reputation on D-Day and in the two months of grim fighting that followed. It jumped again in the Rhine crossings, and fought its way deep into Germany by VE-Day - only to be disbanded soon afterwards. In the post-war era soldiers struggled to keep airborne skills alive until an ambitious new Airborne Regiment was raised in 1968. Since its controversial disbandment in 1995, the airborne torch has been carried onwards by the Parachute Companies of three Canadian infantry regiments who have recently served in Afghanistan. This book details the fascinating history of the Canadian Airborne forces. Softcover, 64 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $18.95.

Volume 20 - 1st printing. "The Iran-Iraq War 1980-1988!" By Efraim Karsh. The Iran-Iraq War, which ended in August 1988, one month short of its eighth anniversary, was one of the longest, bloodiest and costliest Third World armed conflicts in the twentieth century. Professor Karsh addresses the causes of the Iran-Iraq War, unpacking the objectives of the two belligerents and examining how far objectives were matched by strategy. He assesses the war's military lessons regarding such key areas as strategy, tactics and escalation and in particular the use of non-conventional weapons, Finally, he examines the utility of armed force as an instrument of foreign policy. Softcover, 96 pages, PC/PB&W Cover price $19.95.

Volume 131 - 2nd and later printings. "Germany's Eastern Front Allies 194145!" Written by Peter Abbott. Art by Mike Chappell. The 1930s were a time of growing tension for the smaller states of Eastern Europe. Since the end of the First World War they had enjoyed an independence which most of them had not known for centuries, but this was now threatened by the growing power of Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. Instead of combining for self defence, they were bitterly divided. The Munich crisis showed how little reliance could be placed on the Western democracies, whose power to intervene militarily in Eastern Europe was negligible. In effect this left the smaller East European states with little alternative but to become clients of either Germany or Russia. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 246 - 1st printing. "The Romanian Army of World War II!" Written by Mark Axworthy. Art by Horia Serbanescu. Although Romania had fought for the Allies in World War I with the fall of her allies the Czechs and the French mid-1940 she was forced to join the Axis. A coalition government was formed under General Antonescue who proved to be one of Germany's most effective military allies. The Romanian army saw extensive action and suffered terrible losses in operation Odessa and at Staligrad. By 1944 the Soviets were within the Romanian borders and the King sued for peace. Romania's defection significantly accelerated the end of the war. Her natural resources were now denied to Germany and her forces constituted the fourth largest Allied army. this book details the uniforms, equipment and unit organisation of the Romanian army during the entire conflict. Volume 391 - 1st printing. "The British Army in World War I (1)!" Written by Mike Chappell. Art by Mike Chappell. At the outbreak of World War I in August 1914 the British Army was unique: it was a small force raised entirely by voluntary recruitment. The first campaigns of the British Expeditionary Force brought admiration from the enemy, but by the end of 1914 it had been virtually eliminated. Kitchener's call for new volunteers drew such a patriotic response that by mid-1916 the BEF had grown to 55 divisions. This book explains and llustrates the uniform, equipment and organization of the British Army up to the end of the battle of the Somme. Softcover, PC/PB&W.

Volume 1 - 1st printing. "1942-1943!" Story and art by Walt Kelly. Early work from the creator of the celebrated Pogo syndicated strip! Along with fellow Disney alumnus Carl Barks, Walt Kelly is now considered one of the two classic 'funny animal' artists from the golden age of comics. Surprisingly, Kelly's longest-running continuing series was based on actual people, the 'real-life' characters of MGM's durable short-film series, Our Gang (a.k.a. The Little Rascals). Spirited and engaging, Kelly's Our Gang harks back to the days before television, when kids spent most of their time playing outdoors, limited only by each other's imagination and ingenuity. Kelly created nearly 100 Our Gang stories by the end of its 59-issue run in 1949, the year he quit comic books to switch careers a final time as syndicated artist/writer on the immortal newspaper strip, Pogo. This is the first in a series of books reprinting Walt Kelly's Our Gang stories. Suitable for both adults and children, Fantagraphics Books has lovingly restored the work from their comic book appearance, which will be printed in their original four-color splendor. Introduction by Film critic, historian and author, Leonard Maltin. Softcover, 7-in. x 9 1/2-in., 104 pages, full color. Cover price $12.95.

Volume 3 - 1st printing. "1945-1946!" Story and art by Walt Kelly. Walt Kelly's spirited and engaging Our Gang harkens back to the days before television, when kids spent most of their time playing outdoors, limited only by each other's imagination and ingenuity. Kelly created dozens of Our Gang stories by the end of its 59-issue run in 1949, the year he quit comics to create the immortal syndicated newspaper strip, Pogo. In Our Gang Volume 3, Kelly hits his stride in supplying eight adventures of the mainstay off-beat personas as well as other whimsical characters, from mad scientists to eccentric animals. Fantagraphics Books has lovingly restored the work from the original comic books, giving Kelly's art a new four-color splendor! With a cover by Jeff Smith! Volume 4 - 1st printing. "1946-1947!" Story and art by Walt Kelly. Created in 1946 and 1947, these stories show Walt Kelly refining the style that would serve him so well for his later masterpiece - Pogo. Much of this fourth volume is taken up with an extended four-part cycle of stories -- almost a graphic novel, really! - in which Froggie and the Gang (including Julip the Goat) ship out with Professor Gravy on his showboat for an engagement downriver, which results in a series of action-packed adventures involving fisticuffs, gunfire, fireworks, and horse thieves!
