Small, Fred Harman, and Win Smith. The Funnies presented reprints of classic comic strips, including Roy Crane's influential Captain Easy, alongside original material. With the departure of former editor MC Gaines, this issue debuts several new features, including Edgar Rice Burroughs' authorized comic-strip adaptation of John Carter, Warlord of Mars. This is the first appearance of John Carter of Mars in a comic book. Another character making his comics debut is the early toon Bosko, in an adaptation of his 1931 Looney Tunes cartoon, Bosko Shipwrecked! Tex Ritter tracks down cattle rustler Dorgan, but Dorgan has dynamite, in an adaptation of the 1939 Western movie Sundown on the Prairie. Plus a comics adaptation of The Marvelous Land of Oz featuring art by Walt Spouse.
