He's perhaps best known for his work on Captain Marvel, Jr. and the Green Lama in the 1940s. Volume 2 - 1st printing.

Written by Mac Raboy and Don Moore. Art by Mac Raboy.

Continuing Dark Horse Comics' tradition of finer reprint books, this is the second volume in our archival collection of Mac Raboy's lengthy Flash Gordon run. This series marks the first time that Raboy's Flash Gordon strips have ever been collected. Beginning his comics career in 1940, Emanuel "Mac" Raboy is perhaps best known for his work on Captain Marvel, Jr. and the Green Lama in the 1940s. He graduated from a government-funded art class, was heavily influenced by Alex Raymond's style, and, in the Spring of 1948, he signed on with King Features to illustrate the "Flash Gordon" Sunday page. Following in the footsteps of his idol, Mac Raboy's run on this serial was actually longer than Raymond's. Raboy drew the strip until his death in December of 1967, and several of his early wood engravings (from his fine art days) remain in the permanent collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum.

    Softcover (Horizontal Format), 12-in. x 9-in., 256 pages, B&W. Cover price $19.95.

    Volume 4 - 1st printing. "1990-1993!"

Story and art by Lynn Johnston.

This volume includes the story that earned Lynn Johnston a Pulitzer Prize nomination. The '90s start with a bang for the Pattersons when Elly finds out she is pregnant! Follow April Patterson as she grows from a toddler to a three-year-old, all in this single volume-but that isn't all the excitement in the house, especially when there is a teenager around. Michael gets his first summer job, a steady girlfriend, and a driver's license-if he passes the test. Adolescence is just as challenging for Elizabeth, who navigates middle school, learns to cope with the stigma of wearing glasses, and is peer-pressured into smoking a cigarette! Meanwhile, John succumbs to his (first) mid-life crisis when he buys his first model train.

The highlight of this collection, however, is Lawrence's coming out story, a tender and compassionate tale of gender identity and acceptance for which Lynn was deservedly nominated for the newspaper industry's top honor. Includes every comic strip from December 10, 1989 to April 24, 1993.

This item is not in stock at MyComicShop. If you use the "Add to want list" tab to add this issue to your want list, we will email you when it becomes available.

Forty Years With Mr. Oswald, published in 1968, and written and illustrated by Russell "Russ" Johnson, chronicles wonderfully via a comic strip format one man's lifetime in the hardware business. Russ Johnson started drawing strips about daily life and trials of a hardware store owner around 1927 when he went to work in his fathers hardware store. Soon, the Hardware Retailer, a magazine geared towards hardware store owners and suppliers, found out about these strips and asked Johnson to begin submitting strips for each months issue. Johnson continued drawing Mister Oswald for the next 65 years. Johnson adds a nice anecdotal summary before each chapter. The attention to detail is impressive given how busy Johnson was as he was almost always working. The first few pages of the book look almost nothing like the rest because Johnsons style and sophistication as a comic artist and story teller grew at a very rapid rate. Johnsons characters are filled with life through masterful story telling, realistic settings, brilliant situations, and hilarious dialog. The writer who contributed to this review concludes, "Each page has me wishing I worked with these people and I cant stop wondering what it might have been like to know and work with the real Mr. Oswald." Black and white art, 286 pages, hardback.

The popular parenting webcomic featured on HuffPost, Buzzfeed, and Upworthy is now a book!

Parenting can be a magical journey full of bliss and wonder... if you're on the right meds. For the rest of us, it's another thing altogether. Fowl Language takes an unvarnished look at the tedium and aggravation of parenting, while never forgetting that the reason we put up with those little jerks is that we love them so damn much. By poking fun at the daily struggles parents face, these cartoons help all of us feel less alone in our continual struggle to stay sane.

1st printing. By Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott. Kirkman and Scott don't just have their fingers on the pulse of the modern middle-class family; they have a grip on its wrist like a mother pulling a three-year-old past a grocery store cookie aisle. Tadpoles in the toilet, backseat border wars, emergency homemade diapers . . . welcome to another year in the life of the never-a-dull-moment McPherson family. While sister Zoe and brother Hammie's budding sibling rivalry reaches new heights (and volumes), baby Wren is making great strides of her own. With the advent of "the climbing phase" no coffee table, countertop, or bookshelf is too high. For years, the team of Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott have given readers a too-funny-to-be-true, too-real-not-to-be insider's view of the American dream. They get the details and dilemmas so right, in fact, that it's a wonder they haven't been indicted for domestic surveillance. Softcover (Horizontal Format), 11-in. x 9-in., 240 pages, full color. Volume 1 - 1st printing. "Wally's Gang Early Years (1928-1949) and The Bowser Boys (1946-1950)!" Story and art by Frank Johnson. Edited by Chris Byrne and Keith Mayerson. Foreword by Chris Byrne. Introduction by Keith Mayerson. An astonishing historical and artistic discovery: a 2300 page proto-graphic novel begun by a "weekend cartoonist" in 1928 and continuing over the next 50 years! When Frank Johnson, an itinerant musician and shipping clerk, died in 1979, he left behind a startling discovery: more than 2,300 notebook pages of comics and 131 unbound drawings, among them a massive, continuous story line beginning in the earliest surviving notebook dated 1928 - before the existence of comic books! - and following the exploits of his own cast of characters across 50 years until Johnson passed away. During this lifelong project, Johnson invented in private many of the conventions and tropes that define comics storytelling, effectively enacting an alternative secret history of the comics medium. This debut publication of Johnson's work is the first of two 600+ page volumes that will collect the best 1200 pages of his comics, including Wally's Gang, his 50-year magnum opus chronicling the humorous, cliff-hanging adventures of a group of bachelor friends; The Bowser Boys, a seamy, darkly slapstick depiction of bohemian street life that could be considered the first underground comic series; and, coming in Volume 2, Juke Boys, absurd, self-reflexive graphic experimentation. Curator and historian Chris Byrne and fine artist and graphic novelist Keith Mayerson have brought this astounding work into the light of day and provide historical background and analysis. Softcover, 634 pages, full color. Cover price $49.99.

Frazetta Funny Stuff HC (2012 IDW) 1-1ST

1st printing. Frank Frazetta! He's been rightfully called "The Grand Master of Fantasy Art"! But, it's little known that Frazetta also conquered other worlds in the Golden Age of Comics, as shown in his Donald Duck-ish funny animal and hilarious hillbilly comic book stories. Even those aware of this wonderful Frazetta art don't know the extent--this book is a whopping 256 page, large-format pages! Did we mention ferocious, terrifying wolves and swampland creatures in the plethora of animal stories illustrations as only Frazetta could draw them? There's also lions and tigers and bears--oh my!--before Frazetta's famous paintings captured the same subjects. But wait, there's more! (As they say.) You'll see the roots of the Frazetta Girl in the sexy Kathy teenage girl adventures. And there's the hot Daisy Mae-look-alike, Clarabelle, in the hillbilly hi-jinks stories of her beau, Looey Lazybones (Holy Li'l Abner!). The introduction is by the famed cartoon director Ralph Bakshi who well knew Frazetta and closely worked with him when they co-produced the animated feature film, "Fire and Ice." Bakshi shares rare insights, anecdotes, photos and Frazetta drawings. And Bakshi has created a special painting of Frazetta and himself as funny animals for this beautiful hardcover full-color coffee table book! Frank Frazetta's Funny Stuff is edited and designed by Eisner award-winner Craig Yoe. Hardcover, 8 1/2-in. x 11-in., 256 pages, full color. Cover price $49.99.
