"Cartoons Tell the Story - The Gift of Simple Speech." 16 page booklet published by the Republican National Committee and featuring anti-New Deal rhetoric and political cartoons from various newspapers of the day. The text and cartoons accuse New Dealers of over-spending at the expense of taxpayers, not creating enough jobs, creating too much regulation that stifles business, and points out the "evils of paternalism" -- including programs for public education, support, jobs, and pensions. It encourages readers to vote for Kansas governor Alf Landon and his running mate Frank Knox in the 1936 presidential election, "to win back America." (His opponent, the incumbent Franklin D. Roosevelt, won by a landslide - Landon lost by more than 10 million more popular votes, with 8 electoral votes to Roosevelt's 523.) The cover depicts Roosevelt giving a speech about "Dream Castles" while a folksy looking Governor Landon shakes the hands of the reg'lar folk (Landon was a millionaire oilman who supported much of the New Deal during his time as governor of Kansas). 5-1/4" x 7-1/2", B&W.
