Hooked! graphically illustrates the dangers of heroin addiction. Smoking marijuana, often a precursor to more serious rug addition, is depicted along with other effects and consequences such as painful withdrawal, prostitution to get drug money, overdosing, and death by drug overdose. In the story told here, drug abuse tears a family apart and ruins two people's lives. The begins with Eddie recounting how he got started smoking pot through peer pressure. He soon learns how to use "H" (heroin) by snorting it and doing "skin pops". He meets a girl who begs him to quit and that only drives him to start shooting up. He soon starts stealing from her to keep the habit going. Eventually he gets his girlfriend hooked on "the junk" and she must start prostituting herself so they can both get their heroin. This miserable life continues for them for a while until one day she overdoses and dies. At the funeral Eddie is shunned by his family and called a murderer by hers. A very sad and scary story with a realistic tone. 32-pages, full-color, all newsprint, 6-in. x 4-in. No publication date or copyright, circa 1960-70.

Published 1954 (est.) by Bell Telephone.$29.00
View scansCirca 1954. Assumed Bell Telephone (AT&T). Promotional brochure, likely produced by Bell Telephone, meant to instruct the public on proper etiquette when using a telephone party-line. Illustrated by Dik Browne, known for his work on "Hi and Lois" and as the creator of "Hagar the Horrible". It's possible that Browne drew this while working for the Johnstone & Cushing ad agency, as AT&T was one of their clients and they frequently hired cartoonists. Each page has a charming six-panel cartoon showing an example of rude or inconsiderate use of a party-line, then a caption below instructing the proper use. 8" x 10 1/2". 6 pages. Two-color.
