1st printing. Signed Edition Limited to 100 copies. Story and art by Sylvie Rancourt. In 1980, Sylvie Rancourt and her boyfriend moved to Montreal from rural Northern Quebec. With limited formal education or training, they had a hard time finding employment, so Sylvie began dancing in strip clubs. These experiences formed the backbone of the first Canadian autobiographical comic book, Melody, which Rancourt wrote, drew, and distributed. Later, Rancourt collaborated with artist Jacques Boivin, who translated and drew a new series of Melody comics for the American market. The Rancourt drawn-and-written comics have never before seen English publication. These stories are compelling without ever being voyeuristic or self-pitying, and her drawings are formally innovative while maintaining a refreshingly frank and engaging clarity. Rancourt shares a world that, in someone else's writing, might be scandalous or seedy, but in hers is fully realized, real, and often funny. Hardcover, cloth-bound spine, 5 1/2-in. x 7 3/4-in., 352 pages, B&W. Mature Readers

Volume 1 - 1st printing. By Barry Lyga. A Young Readers Novel! Critically acclaimed author Barry Lyga's middle-grade debut Archvillain now in paperback! Kyle Camden knows exactly where he was the night Mighty Mike arrived: sneaking around the fallow field behind Bouring Middle School, preparing one of his most ingenious pranks yet. Which is why he couldn't tell anyone where he was. Or what he saw. Those lights everyone saw in the sky weren't tiny meteors burning up in the atmosphere. They were some kind of strange, supercooled plasma that bathed the entire field - including Kyle - in alien energies. Unfortunately, the energies also brought Mighty Mike to Earth. Kyle is the only one who knows that Mighty Mike is an alien. Everyone else thinks that Mike is just some kid who stumbled into the field, got beefed up on meteor juice, lost his memory, and decided to start rescuing kittens from trees. But Kyle knows the truth. And he'll do anything in his power to stop Mighty Mike, even if it means being an Archvillain! Hardcover, 5-in. x 8-in., 186 pages, Text Only. Cover price $16.99.

    Archvillain HC (2011 Scholastic) 2-1ST

Volume 2 - 1st printing. "The Mad Mask!" By Barry Lyga. A Young Readers Novel! Things haven't been going well for Kyle since Mighty Mike became the new town hero. He's pretty sure he could fix this disaster if he could expose Mike's secret (he's an alien), but to do that Kyle would have to admit he is the Azure Avenger - the unintentional town archvillain. One night a new masked hero, aptly named the "Mad Mask", arrives, boasting to the Azure Avenger of an off-the-charts IQ and superior superpowers. Yet the Mad Mask has come seeking intellectual assistance in building Ultitron (the robot of all robots). In exchange he offers to allow the Azure Avenger to use the awesome Ultitron to rid the world, or at least Bouring, of Mighty Mike. Forging alliances isn't usually Kyle's style, but it seems he has no choice. While Kyle agrees to help, he also has another plan: finding out who the Mad Mask is and how he got his powers. Because the last thing the Azure Avenger needs is another mindless archvillain hanging around town! Hardcover, 5-in. x 8-in., 226 pages, Text Only. Cover price $17.99.

1st printing. SPECTACULAR FAUX-WOODCUT VISTAS MAKE TARDI'S GROUNDBREAKING "ICEPUNK" STORY A RETRO CLASSIC In its ongoing quest to showcase the wide range of Jacques Tardi's bibliography, Fantagraphics reaches all the way back to one of his earliest, and most distinctive graphic novels: A satirical, Jules Vernes-esque "retro-sci-fi" yarn executed on scratchboard in a stunningly detailed faux-woodcut style perfectly chosen to render the Edwardian-era mechanical marvels on display. In 1899, "L'Anjou," a ship navigating the Arctic Ocean from Murmansk, Russia, to Le Havre, France comes across a stunning sight: A ghostly, abandoned vessel perched high atop an iceberg. But exploring this strange apparition is the last thing the sailors will ever do, as their own ship is soon dispatched to Davy Jones' locker via a mysterious explosion. Enter Jérôme Plumier, whose search for his missing uncle, the inventor Louis-Ferdinand Chapoutier, brings him into contact with the sinister, frigid forces behind this - and soon he too is headed towards the North Pole, where he will content with mad scientists, monsters of the deep, and futuristic submarines and flying machines. Told with brio in hilarious slabs of vintage purple prose, The Arctic Marauder works both as ripping good adventure story and parody of same, and, predating as it does the later and not dissimilar Adèle Blanc-Sec series, is a keystone in Tardi's oeuvre in his fantastical mode. Hardcover, 8-in. x 11-in., 64 pages, B&W. Cover price $16.99.

1st printing. Story and art by Chris Oliveros.

A deep dive into a contentious and dramatic period in Canadian history—the rise of a militant separatist group whose effects still reverberate today.

It started in 1963, when a dozen mailboxes in a wealthy Montreal neighborhood were blown to bits by handmade bombs. By the following year, a guerrilla army camp was set up deep in the woods, with would-be soldiers training for armed revolt. Then, in 1966, two high-school students dropped off bombs at factories, causing fatalities. What was behind these concerted, often bungled acts of terrorism, and how did they last for nearly eight years?

In Are You Willing to Die for the Cause?, Quebec-born cartoonist Chris Oliveros sets out to dispel common misconceptions about the birth and early years of a movement that, while now defunct, still holds a tight grip on the hearts and minds of Quebec citizenry and Canadian politics. There are no initials more volatile in Quebec history than FLQ—the Front de libération du Québec (or, in English, the Quebec Liberation Front). The original goal of this socialist movement was to fight for workers' rights of the French majority who found their rights trampled on by English bosses. The goal became ridding the province of its English oppression by means of violent revolution.

Using dozens of obscure and long-forgotten sources, Oliveros skillfully weaves a comics oral history where the activists, employers, politicians, and secretaries piece together the sequence of events. At times humorous, other times dramatic, and always informative, Are You Willing to Die for the Cause? shines a light on just how little it takes to organize dissent and who people trust to overthrow the government.

Areas of My Expertise HC (2005 Dutton) 1-1ST

In the great tradition of the American almanac, The Areas of My Expertise is a brilliant and hilarious compendium of handy reference tables, fascinating trivia, and sage wisdom on all topics large and small. Here is a different kind of handy desk reference, one in which all of the historical oddities and amazing true facts are sifted through the singular, illuminating imagination of John Hodgman—which is the nice way of saying: He made it all up. Perfect for anyone who thirsts for knowledge, and especially for collectors of books of fake trivia, The Areas of My Expertise offers through absurdity a better understanding of the world we share—and recognizes that while the truth may be stranger than fiction, it is never as strange as lies...or as true. Armadillo Prophecy HC (2024 Ablaze) 1-1ST

    (see more images)

1st printing. Story and art by Zerocalcare. Translated by Carla Roncalli di Montorio. The Armadillo Prophecy is Zerocalcare's debut OGN, and it's the story of how he coped with learning too late that a dear friend from his childhood had died, all while a giant armadillo represents his imaginary conscience. Dryly funny, witty, and inventive, it's a classic that has sold over 140,000 copies in Italy alone. Now in its 13th reprint, it is Zerocalcare's most popular title. Structured as a series of short stories that tie in to form a cohesive narrative, this is the seminal story that made Zerocalcare famous for his ability to write comedy with depth and elements of drama embedded in the plot. While it references Italian society, it's definitely a universal tale of loss, coping and coming of age. Season 1 of Zerocalcare's original animated series "Tear Along the Dotted Line" debuted WORLDWIDE on Netflix in November of 2021. Season Two, "This World Can't Tear Me Down," premiered April 2023. Both can be streamed now on Netflix! Softcover, 160 pages, B&W. Mature Readers Cover price $19.99.

Reluctant muse and feminist champion-heiress, rebel, refugee-and perhaps the last of the great surrealist artists, Leonora Carrington played many roles in her long and extraordinary life. Exchanging her privileged upbringing in prewar England for the more exciting elite of Paris's 1930s avant-garde, she comes to rub shoulders (and more) with the likes of Pablo Picasso, Man Ray, and Salvador Dalí after embarking on a complicated love affair with Max Ernst. But the demons that have both haunted and inspired her work are gathering, and when the world goes mad with the outbreak of war and the Nazi invasion, Leonora's own hold on reality collapses into a terrifying psychotic episode of her own. This new work by the acclaimed partnership of Mary and Bryan Talbot celebrates the life and career of a truly remarkable artist and woman. Hardcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 144 pages, full color. In Nashville, Tennessee lives a man, a recluse, a curmudgeonly highfalutin cartoonist-type who, as a young child, had a penchant for drawing and making up tall tales. It was at the tender age of 18 he turned his back on a promising career in adult film cinematography and followed his heart into the unrewarding comic book industry. Out of desperation, Eric kept drawing, painting, and then creating his own characters and worlds culminating with the beloved series, The Goon.

The Art (and Many Other Mistakes) of Eric Powell sheds light on the deliberate and painstaking process of becoming a world-renowned comic book creator as recalled by the artist and a few of his delinquent friends.

This extensive art book spotlights never-before-seen childhood drawings, early superhero test pages, film poster art, and the establishment of Powell's homegrown publishing house Albatross (Exploding) Funnybooks. It's also very funny.

    Hardcover, 12-in. x 12-in., 208 pages, full color.
