This book deals with many aspects of love, sex, and relationships in a lighthearted, playful, and thought-provoking manner.

Love and Death HC (1949) 1949

1st Edition - possibly printed with a dustjacket, but the title text is inlaid on the spine and it likely never had a dustjacket. "Love and Death: A Study in Censorship" (1949) by Gershon Legman. Published five years prior to Seduction of the Innocent, Love and Death harshly criticized the salacious comics of the era, particularly comics that glorified crime and violence, which the author deemed harmful to children. It includes a 28-page chapter, "Not for Children," that begins, "The American generation born since 1930 cannot read" because of the prevalence of "the radio, the talking movie, the picture-magazine and comic book....For them, the printed word is on the way out." And all this before television entered the scene! How strange to hear such familiar arguments being made so many years ago. NOTE: According to the Lost Soti website, the 1949 hardcover first edition was printed in very limited quantities to be given or sold to admirers (estimated around 50 copies). Hardcover, 95 pages, 6.25-in x 9.25-in.

Love and Rockets The Sketchbooks HC (2024 Fantagraphics) 1-1ST

    (see more images)

1st printing. BY Gilbert Hernandez and, Jaime Hernandez. Both Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez developed their skills as artists in public, in the pages of Love and Rockets, and as quickly as any artists ever have. The first issue showed two promising young tyros; by the fourth, both brothers were clearly among the foremost cartoonists of their generation. But not all of that development took place on the main stage of their shared magazine. They built up to their 1981 self-published debut with years of experiments, fan art, zine illustrations, early short comics, and gig posters, and continued to work out in personal sketchbooks after establishing themselves as the preeminent cartoonists they became. Fantagraphics published two volumes of this nascent or private drawing in 1989 and 1992. Now, this deluxe hardcover collects the work from these two volumes with other rarely-seen artwork for a new generation of admirers. It's presented as a dual-sided flip book with one cover, and one half of the book, featuring Jaime's work and a second cover, and other half of the book, highlighting Gilbert's work. The Hernandez Brothers mastery of comics is seen on every page of the thousands of pages of Love and Rockets theyve drawn over the last 40 years. Here, for the first time in three decades, see the work they put into becoming those artists. Hardcover, 10-in. x 13-in., 300 pages, B&W. Mature Readers Cover price $75.00.

Love Me Please: The Story of Janis Joplin HC (2021 NBM) 1-1ST

    (see more images)

    1st printing.

Written by Nicolas Finet. Art and cover by Christopher.

How did a very young messed up woman, a drug addict filled with doubt, become in a few years a planetary icon of rock music?

Janis Joplin went from the shadows to the blinding light of fame in only four records (the last one issued a month and a half after her tragic death). Thanks to a worldwide movement of emancipation which would consecrate for a long time the ideals and modes of alternative lifestyles from counterculture to the flower power generation, Janis, the ugly duckling, gave free rein to her impulses.

Joplin left for San Francisco, the epicenter of cultural innovation, where she lived a freedom of which she would hardly have dared to dream, abandoning herself to all impulses, overcoming without hesitation all the taboos of the time: bisexuality, alcohol, drugs, doing so not only with delight, but with the taste for excess which came naturally from her spontaneous character.

For the better part of three decades romance comics were an American institution. Nearly 6,000 romance comics were published between 1947 and 1977, and there was a time when one of every five comics sold in the U.S. was a romance comic.

This first book devoted entirely to the rarely studied world of romance comics features information on several types of romance comics and their creators, plus the history, numbers, and publishing frequency of dozens of romance titles.

    Story and art by Christopher.

Like the best rock n' roll bands, Love Song is four parts that harmonize the muddy and messy chords of life into a breathtaking resolution. United by a shared love of music, this collection of four "albums" is composed of a series of short stories, each running into the next like best cuts from your favorite records. And like a classic album, Love Song gets the joy and humor out of the way up front, letting the story wind its way into the dark and serious corners of adult life. Alternating between loud and quiet or hard and soft, this story will sink its hook into readers like a jingle or riff that just won't be easily forgotten.

Lovecraft Squad: Waiting HC (2017 A Pegasus Novel) 1-1ST

1st printing. By Stephen Jones. In April 1936, Lovecraft's novella The Shadow Over Innsmouth was first published. Written five years earlier, but oddly rejected by every magazine it was ever submitted to, it accurately described a series of events that actually happened in February 1928, when federal government agents raided the ancient Massachusetts seaport of Innsmouth and attempted to eradicate a deviant race of ichthyoid creatures which had been interbreeding with the human population for decades, if not centuries. To combat these cosmic horrors, the Human Protection League (H.P.L.) was established to investigate and combat these otherworldly invaders. Down through the decades since, the only defense that has stood between humanity and these creatures of chaos are the agents of the H.P.L.-or, as they are sometimes known to those few who are aware of their existence: The Lovecraft Squad. Hardcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 336 pages, Text Only. Cover price $25.95.

1st printing. Story and art by Esteban Maroto. Illustrated in haunting black and white over 30 years ago, these comics are re-presented in a new edition, adapting three of H.P. Lovecraft's most famous stories involving the Cthulhu Mythos. "The Nameless City" is considered the first story of Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, detailing the discovery of an ancient city in the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula built by an unnamed race of reptilian beings. In "The Festival," a man arrives at the sea town of Kingsport, Massachusetts during Christmas but finds a place eerily empty and centuries out of date. "The Call of Cthulhu" is perhaps Lovecraft's most famous story, describing a man who, after finding the notes of his granduncle, is lead on a journey around the world in search of a mysterious and disturbing phenomenon.
