Tags: Sherman's Lagoon Collection (part 9), Comic Strip ReprintsPublished Apr 2005 by Andrews McMeel.$7.00
1st printing.
Story and art by Jim Toomey.
Sherman the dim-witted shark and his cast of characters in Sherman's Lagoon provide enough laughs for a barrel of monkeys, not that they've ever seen any. The Lagoonies, as they're known to regular comic strip readers, are a motley crew—mostly of sea life—known for their acerbic humor.
There's Megan, Sherman's wife (a soft-touch despite the tough exterior). Fillmore the sea turtle makes up for Sherman's lack of intellect. Hawthorne the hermit crab resides in a beer can and is always in a "crabby" mood. Ernest the fish is a computer whiz, and Thornton the polar bear stumbled upon the island while floating by on an iceberg. Captain Quigley is the only human (or "beach ape") who resides in Sherman's Lagoon. He lost his leg to Sherman and is now out for revenge, but never quite gets close enough. To round out the cast there's Bob the bottom dweller. Enough said.

1st printing. Written by Guillermo Ortego. Art and cover by Mariano Krasmanski. The misadventures of a shipwrecked guy abandoned to his fate in the middle of the ocean are told in this illustrated narrative. Clinging to a wooden box floating adrift, the protagonist reflects on his life: his past experiences as well as his slim chances of survival. Helpless and unable to do anything to improve his condition, he is consumed in his constant daydreams, alternating between absolute despair and quiet abandonment, while suffering from hunger and thirst amidst treacherous weather. His thoughts are related in a stream of consciousness style as he navigates both the physical challenge of the seas and the solitary existence of his mind. Softcover (Horizontal Format), 9-in. x 5-in., 112 pages, B&W. Cover price $12.95.

Story and art by Dr. Charles Johnson.
Before Charles Johnson found fame as a novelist and won the National Book Award for Middle Passage in 1991, he was a cartoonist, and a very good one.
Taught via mail correspondence course by the comics editor Lawrence Lariar, mentored by the New Yorker cartoonist Charles Barsotti, and inspired by the call of poet Amiri Baraka to celebrate and depict Black life in America, Johnson crafted some of the fiercest and funniest cartoons of the twentieth century.
This collection brings together work from across his career: college newspaper gags, selections from his books Black Humor and Half-Past Nation Time, his unpublished manuscript Lumps in the Melting Pot, and uncollected pieces.

Edited by Ivan Brunetti.
Comic art is a vital, highly personal art form in which change - rapid and unpredictable - is the norm. In this exciting new anthology, comic artist Ivan Brunetti focuses on very recent works by contemporary artists engaged in this world of change. These outstanding cartoonists, selected by Brunetti for their graphic sophistication and literary style, are both expanding and transforming the vocabulary of their genre.
The book presents contemporary art comics produced by 75 artists, along with some classic comic strips and other related fine art and historical materials. Brunetti arranges the book to reflect the creative process itself, connecting stories and art to each other in surprising ways: nonlinear, elliptical, sometimes whimsical, even poetic. He emphasizes continuity from piece to piece, weaving themes and motifs throughout the volume.

Story and art by Jim Toomey.
An Illustrated Guide to Shark Etiquette is filled with the no-holds-barred, undersea humor that has made Sherman's Lagoon an international success. The popular cartoon features a dim-witted shark named Sherman, his sea turtle sidekick Fillmore, and an assortment of other coral reef critters who team up to battle the encroachment of civilization on their remote tropical paradise in the South Pacific. As isolated as they are, they still manage to deal with all of modern life's "conveniences" and issues, with hilarious results.
