Someone is killing scientists at a secret government lab in New Mexico. "Call the Challengers!" At the White House, the heroes meet President Nixon, who warns of national security threats. They fly. Dr. Fillmore briefs them. The lab is a half mile underground. In the elevator shaft, they're attacked by a computer-wraith made of bundled wires. It's incredibly strong and charged with electricity. The guys separate. Prof learns the monster is telepathic and tries to mentally control it. Doing so, he's possessed by its evil spirit. In the dark maze of tunnels, Ace is grabbed and dropped. Rocky catches him but is badly injured. Possessed Prof colludes to kill his companions, mentally fighting all the while. They hit on the idea of wrapping themselves with copper wire to ground the charge and chucking dynamite from a self-destruct bomb. Dr. Fillmore is also possessed. Prof guesses he "drove the computers mad" and merged "twisted intelligences" with them. Fillmore attacks with an ax - just as Prof is about to electrocute Red. Dynamites blast them clear. No sign of Fillmore or the monster. The heroes climb to daylight. But Prof knows the evil spirit still possesses him... |
