  • Issue #10-1ST
Magic Whistle TPB (2004-2006 Alternative Comics) 10-1ST

Volume 10 - 1st printing. By Sam Henderson. Publishers Weekly calls Sam Henderson "truly one of the world's funniest cartoonists." His Magic Whistle series has been nominated every single year since 1999 for the Harvey Award for "Special Award for Humor," and Sam was nominated for an Emmy for his writing for SpongeBob SquarePants. Henderson's drawing is intentionally crude, but it has the same kind of energy you see in the work of today's best gag cartoonists. Extremely low-brow humor that almost parodies low-brow humor - it is enjoyable on either level. Softcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 96 pages, PC/PB&W. NOTE: "Henderson's strips range from one-panel gags to frenetic five-page brouhahas, each containing a precise punchline that fastballs a pie in your face," Raves Wizard Magazine.

    Manix Abrera's 12 GN (2022 Ablaze) 1-1ST

    (see more images)

    1st printing.

Story and art by Manix Abrera.

Acclaimed Filipino comic artist and three-time National Book Awardee Manix Abrera, in cooperation with ABLAZE, proudly presents "12".

Twelve remarkable stories, weird and surreal, thought-provoking yet funny, sometimes disturbing, others terrifying, but nonetheless always enchanting. Twelve genuinely touching stories, all drawn in Manix's simplistic style, devoid of words but communicate loudly and resonate wildly with your emotions.

Each story presents itself in its own charm, with intriguing twists - a young man spends his entire life searching for answers but shock awaits when he finally gets that eureka moment; someone finds love that unexpectedly finds somebody else; two men argue over who goes first on an escalator; a mother and daughter fight over a cockroach; a drunk man urinates on a tree and gets a big surprise - making you wonder how these mundane plots can turn out bizarrely, prompting you to reflect and crave for more!

One story reveals a mysterious horror encountered in gloomy desolate highways. Another shows how some group of scientists acquire superpowers because someone hesitated to dissect a frog. A young girl attaches her eyes to a balloon so she can look for her mother above a crowd.

What is the meaning of life? Is finding happiness worth it when you lose what really matters the most? Would you even know what matters the most?

Embrace pain and sorrow. Hope for love and will for hope. Manix Abrera's 12 breaks all language barriers in the world of storytelling, but cuts straight into your soul, touches your heart in several dimensions you can and cannot imagine.

About Manix Abrera Manuel Luis "Manix" Abrera (b. 1982) graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines Diliman. He is a freelance cartoonist, and is the creator of Kikomachine Komix, his long-running daily strip in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. He also contributes a weekly webcomic, News Hardcore!, for GMA News Online. To date, he has produced 16 volumes of Kikomachine Komix, and News Hardcore compilation volume 1. He also released two wordless graphic novels entitled "12" and "14". He is a three-time National Book Awardee for his works, "14" (2015), "News Hardcore: Hukbong Sandatahan ng Kahaggardan" (2016) and "Kikomachine Komix Volume 14: Alaala ng Kinabukasan"(2019).

Manix's art style and discipline is strongly influenced by his father, Jess Abrera, an award-winning editorial cartoonist and Inquirer pioneer, while Manix's love and talent of storytelling is naturally honed in him by his mother, Prof. Bernadette Abrera, a historian and current Dean of the UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy. Story and art by Manix Abrera.

ABLAZE proudly presents 14, the second silent graphic novel created by Filipino comic artist, Manix Abrera. Winner of a National Book Award (Category: Wordless Graphic Literature) in 2015, awarded by the National Book Development Board and Manila Critics Circle.

14 tells the story of a human who mysteriously discovers a 13th floor in his building and finds himself in the middle of a storytelling session among different mythological creatures of Philippine folklore. Together, with a partying crowd of supernatural beings, he listens to stories narrated by creatures such as the Manananggal, Diwata, Tikbalang, Kapre, Tiyanak, and even by a White Lady and a Doppelganger. 14 is a grand narrative of weird yet wonderful tales, humorous albeit dark and spooky, surreal but unarguably true to the emotions of the heart.

Using absolutely no words in this graphic novel, Manix successfully tells the stories through careful planning of each scene and sequence. Frame by frame, panel by panel, Manix effectively renders each scene in detail and maximizes the power of images to completely convey the stories and emotions he wants to evoke in his readers. It is now up to you, the reader, to notice these details, to savor each frame, page by page until the big picture and meaning unfold sans the usual text balloons. Sounds mind-blowing!

    Softcover, 200 pages, full color.

    Cover price $16.99.

He also turns 40 and gets a new job, and then gets another job. Along the way, he draws a three-panel comic describing each day's events, however dramatic or monotonous. Against that steady march of time, patterns emerge and shift and the result is a meditative, addictive read that captures the humanity of everyday life. Softcover, 6-in. x 8-in., 288 pages, B&W. Art and cover by Jack Kamen.

Sci-fi classics from an EC Comics great!

In Jack Kamen's first stories for Weird Science and Weird Fantasy, he and writer Al Feldstein explore the unexpected twists and turns that arise from the unintended consequences of new inventions such as matter transmitters, molecular duplicators, shrinking rays, time machines, and too-perfect robots.

Well-known for his sure hand and slick line and his chic depictions of 1950s-style glamour, Kamen delights in bringing Feldstein's wicked scripts to graphic life-but there's surprisingly sharp social and political commentary as well, with stories that foreshadow the threat of climate change and the perils of artificial intelligence.

From the creation of a miniature civilization to femmes fatale from the future to the precise prediction of the sun going nova, you'll find this collection of sci-fi shockers to be some weird science, indeed!

    Hardcover, 160 pages, B&W.

    Volume 1 - 1st printing. Collects The Avengers (1963-1996 1st Series) #1-20.

Written by Stan Lee, Larry Ivie [as Paul Laiken], and Larry Lieber. Art by Jack Kirby, Don Heck, Dick Ayers, Paul Reinman, George Roussos, Chic Stone, Vince Colletta, Mike Esposito (as Mickey Demeo), and Wally Wood. Cover by Jack Kirby and inks by Dick Ayers. Foreword by Kevin Feige. Earth's Mightiest Heroes Introduction by Kurt Busiek.

By early 1963 the foundations of the Marvel Age had been laid. Marvel editor in chief Stan Lee realized something was missing, so Lee and artist Jack Kirby assembled Iron Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Thor, and the Hulk to create the Avengers.

If the Fantastic Four were family, then the Avengers were the co-workers you didn't choose. Not everyone got along-the Hulk fought with everyone-but working together they could defeat the baddest of Marvel's bad guys, like Loki, Kang the Conqueror, the Masters of Evil, and Immortus. Relive the classic early adventures of Avengers Nos. 1-20 in an XXL-sized edition that's bigger than the Hulk's fist, weightier than Thor's hammer, and with more extras than Iron Man's armor.

TASCHEN has attempted to create an ideal representation of these books as they were produced at the time of publication. The most pristine pedigreed comics have been cracked open and photographed for reproduction in close collaboration with Marvel and the Certified Guaranty Company. Each page has been photographed as printed more than half a century ago, then digitally remastered using modern retouching techniques.

Accompanying the stories are an original foreword by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and an in-depth history by the Eisner Award-winning writer Kurt Busiek that's illustrated with original art, little-seen photographs, and rare documents.

Hardcover (with Box), 11-in. x 15-in., 640 pages, full color. All Ages

    NOTE: Limited to 5,000 copies.
