Comic Book New Releases March 27

April Update: We are now handling new release comics a bit differently. Most new release comics will be offered as "New" rather than assigned indivdual grades. A comic that we offer listed as "New" without a grade could fall anywhere between Very Fine and Near Mint unless otherwise specified in the listing. Many incentive variants and higher value new releases will continue to be assigned grades.

    Anna TPB (2024 Fantagraphics) 1-1ST

    (see more images)

1st printing. Story and art by Mia Oberlander. This debut graphic novel by an up-and-coming star of the German comics scene is an audacious allegory of female resistance and radical acceptance. In the sleepy German countryside live the Annas, cursed to be too tall for their small town. Laughably long-limbed and gangly, their bodies refuse to conform with societal norms of delicate femininity, and the trauma of being different ripples across generations. And yet, there may be a blessing to their burden; like the mighty mountains surrounding their town, they find that there is resilience and strength to be gained from their heightened perspective. Drawn with delightful exaggeration and formal inventiveness, Anna is a tongue-in-cheek, modern-day fairy tale about being "too big" for a narrow-minded world. Softcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 220 pages, full color. Cover price $24.99.

Volume 1 - 1st printing. "1944 to Spring 1946!" Collects The Spirit (1944-1950 Quality) #1-4. Cover by Lou Fine. The Spirit is a fictional masked crime fighter created by cartoonist Will Eisner, who fights crime with the blessing of the city's police commissioner Dolan, an old friend. Despite the Spirit's origin as detective/criminologist Denny Colt, his real identity was rarely referred to after his first appearance, and for all intents and purposes he was simply "The Spirit." The stories are presented in a wide variety of styles, from straight forward crime drama and noir to lighthearted adventure, from mystery and horror to comedy and love stories, often with hybrid elements that twisted genre and reader expectations. Quality Comics was an American comic book publishing company that operated from 1937 to 1956 and was largely influential in creating the Golden Age of comic books. From 1940-1950, printer Everett M. "Busy" Arnold reprinted Eisner's Spirit stories under his Quality Comics banner. Comic book stories from the 1940s and 1950s may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American culture. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While not representing the publisher's view of today's society, these stories are printed as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Hardcover (with Slipcase), 208 pages, full color. Cover price $62.99.
